“Find a community of like-minded individuals early on, that allows you to share challenges and battle compassion fatigue. It enriches the experience, and allows yourself to be grounded in a safe, non-judgmental space.” Bhavik (ભાવિક) R. Shah, Founder & Culture Change Strategist, shared this gem of advice for those starting off their careers in the L&D space in this week’s L&D Collective interview. I have just read this most awesome article Walking alongside:” collaborative practices in mental health and substance use care by Ness, Borg, Semb, et al. (2014), will pop the link in the comments. They talk about two types of collaboration- one facing those we work with and the other the systems we work within. The research found three characteristics of practice, I would thoroughly recommend reading, as it really made me reflect on practice. However, I have summarised some of the main points I took away regarding these characteristics: Walking alongside through negotiated dialogue- Working towards a mutually agreed upon destination, based on where the person is in their life and their hopes and aspirations for their future identity as a starting point. Maintaining human relationships – through seeing the uniqueness of the person, recognition of the individual’s strengths and possibilities- through their eyes (this is a really significant part not letting bias creep in), continuity, time, and belief/ hope in the person’s journey. They highlight the importance of “insisting on human relationships even if the systems in which they worked were fragmented and difficult to understand for persons requesting their support.” Manoeuvring relationships and services- Understanding what is available to support the person’s journey, advocating for the person to ensure access to the right interventions/resources and co-ordinating services. Understanding that there is “not one uniform way of helping.” #desistance #publicprotection #justicegem #probation #collaboration

Setting a goal to improve mental well-being can be both a challenging and rewarding journey. Recently, I focused on exploring the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in my practice. To reach this goal, I followed a series of steps: I immersed myself in researching ACT, understanding its core principles, and how it helps individuals embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them. I engaged with clients to gather their experiences with ACT, which helped create a more informed and compassionate approach. The outcomes were promising—many found that by accepting their feelings and committing to personal values, they began to experience relief and greater satisfaction in their lives. It was heartening to witness their progress! What worked well was establishing open communication and forming a supportive environment where clients felt safe to share. However, I noticed that some individuals hesitated to fully embrace the practice initially. Regular check-ins and small, manageable goals might improve this in the future. For those interested in pursuing something similar, I suggest starting with foundational research and seeking feedback from trusted sources. Remember, it’s all about taking one step at a time towards acceptance and growth. 💪🌱 #MentalHealthMatters #AcceptanceAndCommitmentTherapy #PersonalGrowth #Support #Empowerment
