As the data on the presidential election’s gender divide continues to mount, let’s not set women up for being the scapegoats of a Donald Trump win. Here’s what I mean: Trump gets elected again (or there is a tie) and headlines read, Women failed to vote for Harris. Framing election results this way reinforces an old and tired trope: equity-deserving groups being blamed for the very systemic failures that marginalize them. A trope that shifts attention and accountability away from the those in power, and reinforces the idea that, in this case, women are hapless and helpless when left to their own devices. America has chance to change the conversation this election cycle. Here’s to that story being told justly. Because the story about the results of the US presidential election is just as important as the results themselves.
