This is how we do it! The Human Mule Have you ever felt like a pack mule? Between shuffling my kids' library books, groceries, and all the random items I need to pick up, I've become quite the human mule. We have a library just a block away from my office and over the past few years I've turned into a big library fan. I used to buy books for my kids, only for them to read them in one night and then never touch them again. Now, the library saves me a fortune. But between the library hauls, grocery stops a few times a week, and the miscellaneous items I seem to constantly need, I sometimes worry I'll end up with back problems. Other times, I convince myself I'm getting a great workout. And let's not forget the pickups after school activities—throw their backpacks into the mix, and it feels like I'm training for a marathon. Thankfully, my son is old enough to carry his own backpack now which lightens the load a bit. Despite the constant hauling, there's something oddly satisfying about managing it all. Maybe it's the sense of accomplishment or maybe it's just the hope that one day I'll have biceps of steel. Stay away from working with "Cheap Charlies". They will never stop asking for more for less - and then fail (you). I very rarely give financial discounts for various reasons, specifically because I: - "Eat our own dogfood": We help with value selling - and live it ourselves - Buying cheap = Happy once vs Buying great = Happy consistently - (Dis)Qualification mechanism. I want to partner, not (only) supply - There is always somebody cheaper than you...so I don't start - Investment gets commitment, low price = low commitment Here's a "Cheap Charlie (close to) Client Case Study": 1. Reached out with "I know guy X who knows you" 2. 1st question: "How much does it cost?" 3. 2nd question: "How much discount?" 4. Then: "Still too much for us - lower?" 5. End: "We found a cheaper option" We in this case really strived to make things happen for this founder. We strived to be as flexible as possible on re-scoping the work. But one cannot win "a race to the bottom with Cheap Charlie". The lesson learnt here? Be ready to walk away. Because you know what the only thing worse than wasting time with Cheap Charlie is? "Winning" the work - and then being stuck with a client obsessed over cost instead of value. Disqualifying Cheap Charlies takes you minutes - and then you're done with them. "Working your way out of them" can take you months - and even cost you talent. Agree?
