Did you know Michelin stars weren't always for restaurants? In 1900, the Michelin tyre company created The MICHELIN Guide, a guidebook to encourage more people to drive (and wear out their tyres). The guidebook included maps, tips, and even a list of restaurants for road trippers. In 1926, they started using stars to rate restaurants. - One star meant "a very good restaurant.” - Two stars were “excellent cooking that is worth a detour.” - Three stars were “exceptional cuisine that's worth a special journey”. But why stars? The 1 to 3 star system is said to have come from the founder's observation that a good restaurant is worth stopping for, even if it's off the main road. Today, getting a Michelin star is a big deal for chefs and restaurants. It can mean fame, fortune, and long waiting lists for reservations.
