As we welcome this 79th session of the UN General Assembly, we need solutions across the board. "Solutions to bring the Sustainable Development Goals back to life, and end poverty and inequality. Solutions to spur economic progress and job-creation for all — especially women and young people. Solutions to bridge the political divides and end the conflicts that are causing so much death and suffering. Solutions to end the climate catastrophe that is killing our one and only home. Solutions to summon the financing that developing countries need to invest in the future of their people. Solutions that give all countries a voice in global institutions of finance, peace and security. And solutions to ensure that groundbreaking technologies like artificial intelligence are a boon, not a barrier, to human progress and equality. World leaders and stakeholders recently gathered in New York at the UN General Assembly #UNGA and the Summit of the Future to adopt the ground-breaking UN Pact for the Future as part of an effort to: transform global governance, reaffirm the #SDGs, and the objectives set forth in the United Nations Charter. It is particularly interesting for #Catalyst2030 as it includes a commitment to 'turbocharge the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030 and beyond.' It is a very detailed document (166 pages), so we thought it might be helpful to provide key highlights. All in all, it provides an inspiring and promising new direction! KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PACT Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The Pact includes 56 specific actions aimed at accelerating the implementation of the SDGs. It emphasizes the urgent need to eradicate poverty, end hunger, and close financing gaps in developing countries. Notably, it seeks to reform international financial architecture to better serve these nations and ensure sustainable borrowing practices. Peace and Security: The Pact marks a notable recommitment to nuclear disarmament, aiming for total elimination of nuclear weapons. Additionally, it includes plans for reforming the UN Security Council to enhance its effectiveness and representation, particularly addressing Africa's historical under-representation. Climate Action:  There is a strong emphasis on combating climate change, with commitments to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 °C and transition away from fossil fuels by 2050. The Pact also outlines measures to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable resource use. Digital Cooperation:  The annexed Global Digital Compact serves as a framework for digital governance and AI management. It aims to connect all individuals to the internet and ensure safe online spaces while establishing guidelines for AI development. Future Generations:  A Declaration on Future Generations was also included, which emphasizes the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes that affect their lives. This reflects a commitment to ensuring that future generations have a voice in global governance.

The Pact for the Future adopted at the UN's Summit of the Future this weekend acknowledges the need of a transformation of global governance. An opinion piece published today notes that the Summit "failed to deliver the radical change the world needs to truly live up to the UN objectives to maintain peace and security and achieve international cooperation in solving collective problems." In order to do so, the groundwork needs to be laid for a reform of the UN's founding document, the UN Charter, the article argues. Among other things, "a new charter could introduce a parliamentary assembly made up of representatives elected by the people of the world, giving them a say in the way world affairs are run and ushering in a whole new era of inclusion and representation."
