1.14 million. It's the population of Baltimore, MD and Albuquerque, NM combined. Taylor Swift sold that many copies of her album Midnights. It's the number of millionaires living in California. Also, according to the Veterans Administration, the estimate of the number of servicemembers lost in conflicts fought by the United States. On one hand, it is altogether fitting that we should dedicate a day to remember and honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and our allies. On the other hand, the immensity of this number and the loss it encompasses is staggering. Tragic. For each servicemember counted, there are family members and friends, platoon-, ship-, and squadron-mates that are impacted by these losses. Often for the rest of their lives. Those impacts far outlive the length of time one may know the servicemember that didn't make it home. It is certainly true for me, and I know I am not alone in this amongst my colleagues. There is often a fusion of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in people's minds. Simply put, it is never a bad time to thank a veteran for their service, but Memorial Day isn't for those of us that remain. There is also the tendency to focus on celebrating the start of summer instead of remembering the original reason for the holiday. This is not to say we shouldn't enjoy time with family and friends. Quite the opposite. There few better ways to honor a sacrifice than celebrating what it provides. Only a humble request to add something simple to your agenda. During this time off and all the benefits to mind, body and spirit that it hopefully gives to you, consider taking a moment or two to reflect, in whatever manner you choose, on the purpose for and significance of the Memorial Day holiday

Honoring Veterans’ Strength and Dedication Today, the Undaunted Warhorse Initiative honors the extraordinary individuals who have served with steadfast commitment, courage, and resilience. Veterans embody an unwavering focus on the mission, even in the face of hardship. Their ability to persevere, adapt, and press forward is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the courage to endure. Veterans inspire us all to live with purpose and intention, to push through obstacles, and to keep moving forward—especially when emotions or circumstances threaten to cloud our path. Their mindset of service, sacrifice, and unity teaches invaluable lessons in resilience and steadfastness. As we reflect on their sacrifices, we’re encouraged to bring that same focus and tenacity to our own lives and missions. Though we each walk different paths, the example set by our veterans reminds us that dedication to a worthy mission, fortified by the right mindset, can help us overcome any obstacle. To every veteran we’ve served with and those we’ve yet to meet: we thank you for your courage, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to something greater than yourselves.

Today, on Veterans Day, I’m reflecting on what it means to serve — not just in uniform, but in life. Service isn’t just a job; it’s a commitment to something bigger than yourself. Man, veterans understand this better than anyone. They’ve experienced the weight of responsibility, the courage it takes to stand in the face of fear, and the discipline to keep moving forward when others would step back. 1 / Service is about sacrifice — giving up comfort, sometimes even safety, for a purpose that others may never see or understand. It’s a choice to put others first, to act with integrity, and to honor commitments, even when no one’s watching. 2 / Today, as we honor those who’ve served, let’s ask ourselves: What do we serve? How often do we look beyond ourselves to a cause or a mission that truly matters? Because the principles that veterans embody—courage, duty, selflessness—aren’t just for the battlefield. They’re for life. 3 / The best way to honor our veterans is to carry those values forward in our own lives, in whatever small ways we can. To all who’ve served, thank you for reminding us what true dedication looks like.
