“Become a work ready software engineer in 13 weeks” If someone said you could be fluent in a foreign language in 13 weeks you’d think they were crazy. Yet people believe you can learn a complex trade in the same amount of time. Coding boot camps boomed during the zirp era. I hope their pitch is less tempting now. If you’re really starting from scratch you don’t need to even pay. Free code camp has plenty of resources. It realistically takes 2-3 years before someone is really useful in an enterprise environment starting from scratch. That’s not to say you can’t make a useful contribution before that. Engineering leaders are often under significant pressure to deliver so supporting junior staff who are learning is often viewed as a time and budget constraint. Business and engineering leaders should feel some obligation to invest in training more than they currently do. But code camps that promise jobs in complex trades should be more honest too. #cto #softwareengineering

To think that I said to myself that I would master software engineering within a year when I first started learning to code... To think that after a year, I looked back and wondered why I had nothing to show for all the efforts I had put in... Imagine how I must have felt after a year when I realized that I didn't even know what software engineering is or what software engineers do... With all the efforts I had put in. With all the struggles. With all that 8 hours (on average) per day study approach I utilized, yet nothing. I remembered when a very good friend of my dad came visiting. I remembered him ask the big question I didn't even know I needed to ask myself, "After all these months, where are your deliverables?" Even though I told myself I was doing all the work and would see results soon, I was wasting time. Yes, I was learning, but to what end? I didn't even know what software engineering is, yet I had dug into concurrency in Python, I had learned and understood decorators, generators, and so on but didn't know what to use them for. There was no exposure to make me understand what kind of problem they exist to solve. There was no exposure to make me understand what problems software engineers solve. There was no mentor... There was not even a close friend I know doing what I was about to venture into. So, I wasted one year. Yet, I believed I learned so much that year. But to what end? So when I finally found my compass, I told myself: Whenever you find that you are learning by quanta, and you cannot map whatever you are learning to a real world problem or find an immediate real-world application of what you are learning, ditch it. While learning that may still be valuable and important, it's just not the most urgent priority right now. And two years after, I still carry this with me. Though I have failed to execute the notion a few times, it is still a strong reminder that rings loud in my head and deafens the other noises. #softwareengineering #learningjourney #sharingmyexperience
