I love the work Joss Colchester is doing in Systems Innovation. We can consider ourselves a system and this model is a more helpful way of viewing how we transform. For the people I work with they might be considering a big transition. They might be excited about the idea of leaving employment or contracting behind and starting a business. This business idea is emerging coming from the seeds of ideas such as freedom. They often forget the resources that need to transition (or be composted) to grow the new system/business. These resources are their work and life experiences; their values that aren't being met; their inner nature that wants to be expressed but has been held back in their current working life. I encourage them to focus inwards to generate the energy and inspiration that will fuel them BEFORE they come up with the money making business idea. The business idea MUST be personal - something that would make them proud and inspire them as they follow a brand new path which will be uncomfortable at times.
Instead of making change happen by planning it out, systems innovation is about growing a new system. This requires us to understand how complex adaptive systems grow and how we can best support that growth while enabling the old system to successfully let go and transition resources to the new system when ready. I’ve also come across this idea presented as “best practice to next practice” and it’s a great way to view innovation within organizations. Especially in the public sector where the attitude can sometimes be “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But with this attitude, by the time things break… they really tend to shatter.
