✨ Moment #6 ✨ The Vail School District collaborated with the UA Tech Park at Rita Road to create its first charter school, Vail High School, establishing a groundbreaking model for integrating education with innovation. Building on the success of Vail High School, the district expanded its vision in 2011, creating Vail Academy and High School — a state-of-the-art facility serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This expansion enhanced the campus, cultivating a vibrant environment where education and technology seamlessly intersect. As the first K-12 school developed within a university research park, Vail Academy and High School showcases the transformative power of partnerships. This milestone underscores the district's commitment to educational innovation while positioning the UA Tech Park as a thriving hub where technology and learning converge. #thirtyyearsofshapingmoment #30years #UATechPark

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been connecting with EdTech founders, discussing ways to leverage technology to improve educational outcomes. These conversations brought me back to my teenage years when I was a middle and high school student in Kingstree, SC. If you know anything about Kingstree, then you know its population is around 3,000, and it is located in the poorest county in South Carolina (Williamsburg County). Additionally, according to US News, 100% of students at Kingstree Senior High School are economically disadvantaged. Compared to my educational experience in Kingstree, my Miami public school education was that of Phillip Exeter’s. In Miami, we had smartboards in elementary school, which is one of my earliest memories of innovative education technology, and I competed in several math and science competitions. I even had chance to present scientific findings at Kennedy Space Center back in the sixth grade. When I arrived in Kingstree, my Miami public school education allowed me to perform light years ahead of my peers. However, as I reflect on those years, I now realize Kingstree is the living embodiment of the saying, “Talent is somewhat evenly distributed but opportunity is not.” During my time in the “country,” I met some of the smartest people in the world, such as Shadi McFadden Tyson and Shawn Fulmore to name a few. Education technology can be somewhat of an equalizer, providing economically disadvantaged students with the resources to compete at a high level and learn advanced concepts, helping students overcome educational hurdles due to lack of educational infrastructure and opportunity. EdTech is a sector where you can do good and do well, aligning your self-interest with a true north star. Below is my high school ID from when I was a student at Kingstree Senior High School. #EdTech #Technology #Education

"As Hackley School celebrates an extraordinary 125 years, we find ourselves reflecting not just on this milestone, but also on the traditions that have shaped our history, culture and community," writes Director of the Upper School Andy King in this month's #HackleyPerspectives blog post. "The people participating in these traditions will change. The venues where these rites occur may also change as the campus evolves. What does not change is how these traditions celebrate and elevate Hackley’s core values and culture and bring joy and connection to our community." Read more about some meaningful Hackley traditions in the October 2024 Hackley Perspectives blog post at the link below! #HackleySchool #HackleyPublications #HackleyStudents #HacklelyEmployees #HackleyAlumni #HackleyTraditions #HackleyValues #HackleyCoreValues #Hackley125 #WeAreHackley

What Grade Class @ Killeen Elementary did the KISD Superintendent visit? I'm interested from an aspect of KISD school model/structure - Middle School vs. Jr. HS. If the composition was of Grade 5 students, I saw the initial emergence of "maturity" from pubescence to adolescence. Perhaps a key progressive developmental stage that the KISD Middle School adopted model fails to capture? Adopting a Jr. HS model allows one year further maturity development in an elementary environment, rather being thrust into a Middle School environment (Grade 6 -8) where they're "lowest" on the totem pole - following that ordeal; in transition to HS, they're again "lowest" on the totem pole - another unnecessary, inherently disruptive, self-defeating and avoidable KISD structure/model outcome.
In a heartfelt discussion, Killeen ISD Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Fey sat down with a group of fourth and fifth graders from Killeen Elementary, exploring their ideas, concerns, and hopes for their school. These young minds shared a wide range of ideas, from more playtime and favorite foods in the cafeteria to field trips and hands-on learning. When Dr. Fey asked each what they’d do as “superintendent for a day,” the responses were both insightful and bold—like a fifth-grader's brilliant suggestion for food trucks on Fridays! This vibrant exchange showcased the students' passion not only for academics like math and science but also for creating a positive, respectful environment in their classrooms. Listening to students’ thoughts about their school experience is essential to ensuring our educational spaces foster both growth and joy. Dr. Fey’s commitment to elevating student voices reminds us all that education is about creating a foundation that’s both engaging and empowering, preparing these young leaders to reach for the stars. Let’s continue to value student perspectives and make their school days inspiring, impactful, and yes, especially fun! 🎉 #WeAreKISD #StudentVoice #FutureLeaders #KilleenISD #KISDP1
