The Youth can lead if...
Senegal has set an example for other African countries to follow.
It's leadership has remained young and energetic since , beginning with the first president, Leopold Sedar Senghor, 54 succeeded by abdou diouf, 46.
Notably, there hasn't been a coup in senegal, making it one of the stable democracies in Africa.
The transition from Abdoulaye Wade's presidency ushered in a new generation of young leaders, including Macky Sall, 51 and the current president elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44.
Ghana, however, present a different picture. While the country boasts a growing generation of young leaders, their strong political affiliations raise concerns.
This is evident even within the tertiary education system, where organisations like the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and student leadership positions at various universities exhibit such leanings.
NUGS' adopted slogan, "Aluta continua, Victoria ascerta " ( The struggle continues, Victory is certain) originates from Mozambique's fight for independence under FRELIMO led by Samora Machel.
However, in the Ghanaian context, the slogan seems to have lost its core purpose of advocating solely for students interest.
🤔Who told you the youth can't lead?
The capacity for young people to lead shouldn't be underestimated. History is replete with examples of young leaders who have made profound impact in Africa.
Tom Mboya exemplifies this perfectly. Through his commitment to education, he empowered many future East African elites, including Wangari Maathai, the renowned Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and Leah Marangu. These accomplishments all came when Mboya himself was in his 30's. A true founding member of Kenya, his influence extended far beyond his own political career.
😊Depth in our call to lead..
Mboya's tragic assassination at young age remains a significant loss. However, the legacy of his leadership and dedication to education continues to inspire generations across Africa.
Young people can lead when the substance of their leadership is grounded in virtue, moral courage, sacrifice and indigenous knowledge.
