I'm thrilled to share that recently my paper has been accepted for presentation at prestigious ISARC 2024! 🎉 Impacts of Multi-skills on Project Productivity and Completion Time: A Building Renovation Case Study https://lnkd.in/exyGTUdY In this study, we tackled the intricate challenges of integrated supply chain planning and project management within the construction industry, focusing on large scale multi-skill, resource-constrained, and multi-project scheduling problems. By developing a mathematical MILP model, we optimize schedules for multiple projects with diverse activities, resources, and skill sets. Using data from a Canadian construction company, our real-world case study demonstrates the model's robustness and its ability to support managerial decision-making. The proposed decision support system (DSS) proves invaluable in achieving optimal integrated project scheduling and resource planning, providing enhanced control over multi-skill requirements and resource performance. Research Article | Managing coopetition dynamics: A longitudinal study of a multiparty alliance formation in a large utilities project Renate Taubeneder, Jens K. Roehrich, Beverly B. Gnyawali https://lnkd.in/gVvt9HeW Multiparty alliances (MPAs) are increasingly used to deliver large utilities infrastructure projects on-time, on-budget, and to specified quality. In theory, MPAs should help buyers to coordinate suppliers, enable concurrent scheduling, and create process innovations. On the other hand, these governance structures are inherently less stable than dyadic relationships due to their additional complexity and greater opportunities for free riding. We conduct a multi-source, longitudinal study, investigating how a buyer actively manages the dynamics between competition and cooperation during the formation of an MPA consisting of a lead organization and directional relationships between all partners. We contribute to MPA and coopetition literature by exploring cooperation and competition dynamics that are associated with the MPA structure that would largely be absent in dyads, and unpack the process by which a buyer orchestrates these dynamics by sequentially introducing new initiatives that seek to balance coopetition. MPAs have been recommended by governments and industry bodies as one solution for time and cost overruns in the utilities infrastructure sector, our study also provides guidance to buyers on the management of the alliance during the critical formation stage of the relationship lifecycle. Accounting and Finance textbooks are replete with ratios. While ratios are easy to compute, which in part explains their wide appeal, their interpretation is problematic when two or more ratios provide conflicting signals. Indeed, ratio analysis is often criticized on the grounds of subjectivity, that is the analysts must pick and choose ratios in order to asses the overall performance of a firm. In this paper, we demonstrate that Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can augment the traditional ratio analysis. DEA can provide a consistent and reliable measure of the managerial or operational efficiency of the firm. We test the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between DEA and traditional accounting ratios as a measure of performance of a firm. Our results reject the null hypothesis indicating that DEA can provide information to analysts that is additional to that provided by the traditional ratio analysis. It sounds simple enough: rate, rank and select, but the reality is not so simple. Insufficient information, high uncertainty, biases, company history and politics are all factors that influence decision making. Add to that a lack of resources and uncertain management backing, which is often the reality of innovation projects. Decision-making is complex, but there are some things you can do to make it easier:  👀 Involve the right people in the evaluation process: go abroad those with the right knowledge, and include those with the mandate and power to push ideas forward 🔎 Build a simple and transparent process for evaluation: avoid complex rating systems and focus on a few simple criteria that are communicated upfront 📊 Provide flexible overviews: once evaluations are in, share the results in a manner that gives overview, but also allows for ranking on different criteria  🕰 Get people together to make the final decision: make sure everyone has a chance to get heard, and select ideas based on both consensus and strong individual convictions. Make sure to also discuss actions for deselected ideas 📣 Communicate the results: let people know what the decision is and what the immediate actions are 🏃♂️Get moving, fast: nothing is more detrimental to innovation than a decision that leads to nothing. Human factors affect safety, quality, cost, performance, and schedule. They are important on all projects, but on large complex projects the network of interactions grows in nonlinear ways. This nonlinearity is often underappreciated, as are: • human factors related to the management systems deployed. • work process in use and the tasks performed with them. • equipment in use and the facilities where they are operated. • a broad set of environmental and contextual factors. These human factors are affected by each of the aforementioned, but also act on each, further shaping them. This Executive Insight will show the suite of human factors to be considered in large complex projects is much broader, takes on increased importance, and requires even more attention because of project size and complexity.
