#OurWorldInCharts: Global sales of electric vehicles 🚗 Fewer than 1% of vehicles are electric in South Africa 🇳🇴 The global average is 18%, with Norway topping 90% 🔌 South Africa has relatively few public charging stations: about 400 nationwide (versus 4,000 petrol stations) Fewer than 1% of the vehicles sold in South Africa in 2023 were fully electric or plug-in hybrids, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). In contrast, 93% of vehicles sold in Norway and 60% in Sweden are electric or plug-in hybrids. The global average is 18%. Fully electric cars are entirely battery-powered and must be charged. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles rely primarily on the battery for driving, with the combustion engine engaging when the battery is low. One reason for South Africans’ slow uptake of plug-in and fully electric vehicles is the relatively low number of charging stations. There are at least 400 public charging stations in South Africa, compared with about 4,000 major brand petrol stations. Despite this, the number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in South Africa increased from 384 in 2021 to 1,147 in 2023. #OurWorldInCharts #ElectricVehicles #EVs #SustainableTransportation #ElectricCars #HybridVehicles #GreenEnergy #SouthAfrica #Norway #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #ChargingStations #GlobalTrends #AutomotiveIndustry #FutureOfMobility

#ICYMI, MAN Truck & Bus SE publicly charged for the first time at 750 kW, one of the first in Germany, and very first in Bavaria. This starts to the lay the ground towards climate-friendly long-distance commercial vehicle transport. The average fleet consumption must be reduced by 45% by 2030, which translates to six years to build up the infrastructure. In South Africa, the Johannesburg to Durban commercial route connects to the largest and busiest shipping terminal in sub-Saharan Africa. Along this journey, an average long-distance truck emits about one tonne of CO2 per day. The South African market gets to see some initial entrance of battery electric trucks within the medium- and heavy-duty vehicles segment. #eTruck #MegaWatt #Europe #Germany #Bavaria #MANtruck #CommercialVehicle #ABBemobility #ClimateAction #ZEV #MHDV #DriveToZero #SouthAfrica #SubSaharanAfrica #AfCFTA TRATON GROUP #TheElectricMission on #emissions #eMobility #ElectricMobility #ElectricVehicles

South Africa is embracing the global shift toward sustainability, with a remarkable 78% increase in used electric vehicle (EV) sales in the first half of 2024. This surge reflects the country’s growing interest in greener transportation options. Notably, 82% of all new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold during this period were hybrids, indicating a strong preference for vehicles that blend electric power with traditional fuel, offering a practical solution for drivers looking to transition towards cleaner energy. Despite a 15% drop in EV listings, this upswing reflects a positive shift toward greener transportation solutions in South Africa. #LoveYourJourney
