Don’t kick yourself if you missed out on Samsung’s free TV preorder promo from earlier this month. The company is now offering a much better cash discount on one of its most notable new models: the glare-free Samsung OLED S95D TV. The smallest TV in the lineup, the 55-inch model starts at $2,299.99 ($300 off) at Best Buy and Samsung, while the 77-inch is also $300 off for $4,299.99 (Best Buy, Samsung). The 65-inch TV, meanwhile, is receiving an even steeper $400 discount for $2,999.99 (Best Buy, Samsung). Back in January, we saw for ourselves how well the S95D OLED eliminated most noticeable reflections, even as the TV sat right next to a light source. At the same time, the TV’s display is brighter than ever, with the OLED screen producing rich and vivid colors. The TV also has solid specs for gamers, with four HDMI 2.1 ports and a panel that can handle 144Hz variable refresh rates. Samsung’s Tizen OS smart TV platform also offers a good selection of apps including Netflix, Apple TV, Disney Plus, and Max, while offering support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. LG’s transparent TV is finally available for $60,000 https://ift.tt/VjQIJgu Are you tired of not being able to see the sunset from your high-rise penthouse apartment because of the massive TV screen? If you have $60,000 in your pocket, you can now buy the LG Signature OLED T, a completely wireless, transparent 77-inch OLED TV with a transparent screen. The TV manufacturer showed it off at CES earlier this year, but 12 months later, you can finally buy it if you’re willing to shell out five figures for a single TV. In addition to being transparent, the Signature OLED T (in case you hadn’t guessed, the “T” stands for “transparent”) is a 4K, 120Hz smart TV with true wireless setup. This TV is best suited for a home with floor-to-ceiling windows, where a TV would interfere with your enjoyment of the luxurious, expensive view. The TV also comes with a black curtain that gives the OLED TV a more traditional look. By lowering the curtain when the TV is off, you can see through it “like through a window”. There’s only one size, and it’s big – 77 inches. Anyone with $60,000 will need the space to install it. The point is to create the illusion of extra space when you don’t have to stare at a massive TV taking up half the living room wall. On the other hand, you will lose the point if you put it in the corner of the living room, away from annoying light sources that reflect glare on a traditional panel. The stand is also an integral part of the TV, so if you don’t want to disassemble it, make sure it matches your interior. The $60,000 TV comes with additional side shelves wide enough to hold a plant pot, PlayStation 5, or Xbox upright, but not much else. At least LG offers a special version of its regular home screen called “T Home”. Viewers can still see through the TV, but the illusion is broken when you open one of your apps to view content. At the bottom of the main menu, an additional “T-panel” appears, showing the time, weather, and a simple news slider. The best part is the “T-Objet” permanent display mode, which is best suited for showing off photos or artwork. You connect it to a special “Zero Connect Box” that streams everything to your TV. This is important because there is no room on your TV to connect HDMI or your smart TV dongles. The set-top box should be able to project a signal within 30 feet. You can keep the set-top box next to your TV or tuck it into a nearby cabinet so that nothing interferes with the signal. LG’s Signature T transparent TV supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, as well as the usual suspects HDR10 and HLG. The panel still uses LG’s a11 AI Processor 4K, which comes with artificial intelligence scaling technology developed by the company. It also has LG’s gaming pad and G-Sync feature, which is compatible with VRR for various consoles. Even though the Signature T is see-through, it has regular TV speakers. We at Gizmodo didn’t spend too much time with it, but we found that the woofers sounded great, albeit...

When Smart tech isn't smart, it smarts. We recently inherited (a hand me down) a 2012 Samsung Smart TV. No sooner had we gotten it up and running that we discovered that Netflix, Ch4 and multiple other streaming services are no longer supported on Samsung Smart TVs made in 2011 or 2012. Our Smart TV is now far less smart. https://lnkd.in/eBd_5_WE We already had a perfectly good, not smart Samsung TV, that we could simply have bought a firestick for to make it Smart. We now have two Samsung TVs, neither of which we bought, that require firesticks in order to be Smart. OK, purchasing a firestick is no great expense. But this isn't what bothers me. What bothers me is, this isn't smart! And this built in, or acquired, obselence is far from being a new phenomenon... "The cycle of doom that is being trapped into ditching and re-buying. I was a child when I my grandmother alerted me to this phenomenon. We were in her kitchen waiting for toast to pop up. She said she’d had her toaster for 50 years and in that time it had never needed repairing. My one regret after she died is not getting my hands on that toaster". I appreciate that this might come across as a very western problem, but it's also one with a huge global impact. Making stuff that require huge amounts of energy and precious resources simply for the sake of making profit, is a huge part of why we are where we are. And as Marx pointed out, this is hard-wired into the capitalist model of producing 'goods' for consumer markets. As a family we're now faced with the utterly ridiculous dilema of whether or not to purchase yet another bit of throwaway plastic and rare precious metals, simply to retain the luxury of being able to watch Ch4, or Netflix on demand. And to be blunt this isn't the kind of decision I thought I'd be faced with following the declaration of a climate and nature emergency. I thought I'd be making far more pressing and important decisions than this. Yet here we stand at the end of the Holecene, facing the very real prospect of both ecosystem & societal collapse, an apocalypse, and companies with robust sustainability and environmental policies, and the staff to implement them, are still making products with deliberately short life spans in order to protect their market shares. So no, this isn't about firesticks. And this approach to Smart tech certainly isn't smart.
End of service for the All 4 application on 2011 and 2012 Smart TVs
