Most people won’t watch this video because they don’t actually understand how much post traumatic stress truly effects the lives of our veterans and first responders. Unfortunately, the stressful and unwarranted interaction with security earlier activated a pretty intense migraine, and I had to leave halfway through the event. I’m now back in my room, resting and watching the competition from here, hoping to recover for tomorrow. As you can probably see, K9 Willow is doing her best to distract me right now, because talking about this kind of activates me again, and she knows it. She’s amazing at sensing when I’m starting to get stressed. While I’m doing my best to stay positive, this situation highlights the real impact that a lack of awareness around service dogs and accessibility can have. It wasn’t just a small inconvenience – it affected my entire day, both physically and mentally. And I know I’m not alone in this. I share this not to point fingers but to show how much work we still have to do in terms of education and creating truly inclusive environments. Let’s keep the conversation going, and hopefully, we can create positive change so others don’t have to go through the same thing. Thank you to everyone who has already shown support. Everybody struggles. We're all human, so it's normal that some days are going to be harder than others for one reason or another. Today, a combination of things left me feeling a little "off" from my norm. It was the normal emotional letdown after the successful conclusion of some significant work events and programs, some memories and feelings that were accessed after attending a memorial ceremony earlier this week for federal law enforcement agents here in southern Arizona, and the challenges of some personal relationships that aren't in a place where I'd like them to be right now. Fortunately, thanks to everything I learned about Posttraumatic Growth and how to struggle well courtesy of the Warrior PATHH program at the Boulder Crest Foundation, I was able to take this day where I felt some challenges and turn it into something positive so I am headed into my weekend in a better place. I did some self-regulation, engaged in some wellness practices, and worked through that struggle effectively. What worked for me today? A little smattering of: -Music---on my commute to work this morning, I totally jammed along with one of my favorite playlists and sang along to my heart's content, -Physical activity and nature---we needed firewood, so I did some old-fashioned log splitting with an axe to get out of my head and enable a deeper understanding of those emotions and feelings, -Old friends---you can't make old friends, so those that have been around a long time are invaluable. Just having them around and being present makes a positive impact. It's ok to struggle and it's ok to have hard days. The key is knowing what to do with those struggles so you can turn them into strength and growth. I'm choosing to thrive and use these experiences to make me the best version of myself.
