Nigerian Manufacturers' Preparedness, AFCFTA and International Trade Penetration
As an independent consultant and promoter of the Nigerian Quality Infrastructure Project, back then, it is imperative to always embrace the basic requirements and credentials for international trade engagement.
With China and India pitching their brands around affordable quality and pricing, African institutions are gradually seeing the need to strengthen their locals as well
Engagement with stakeholders and UNIDO top consultant in West Africa region then, revealed reason for rejection of lot of #Nigerian agro product on the global stage, (cowpea, been the focus in 2015), was largely trash in Europe, due to zero global #accreditation, #certification and poor #sanity check
The same neglect is rapidly ravaging the Nigerian bulk raw material space unnoticed
My observation this week, while engaging the big players in the largest chemical market in West Africa and raw materials market within Lagos, raised the need for promoter of #AFCFTA to proactively engage domestic producers and suppliers on how best to tap into the vast business opportunities within the corridor of Africa, most importantly, building overwhelming commitment to continuous improvement and advancement of #accreditation, #certification and basic quality check by Nigerians
This commitment should be a non-negotiation culture to all organizations domestically and outside the shore of this nation, if, our bulk raw material actors and policy maker want to capture the vast opportunities in Africa
My experience this week:
1. I personally bought 50kg of one of the widely abundant #raw #materials in the nation from three different sources in most popular #chemical #market within Lagos and its environs
2. All three suppliers had no CoA, reason been that production were local
3. They went further to raised a non-disclosure altitude, when asked for where it was mined ( I needed it for traceability and documentation)
4. Weight of Nigerian chemical products bought was 20-30% less of it net weight when scaled in-house
5. Competitive chemical brand from India is well packaged, comes with CoA and has exact net weight
Without any iota of ambiguity, other region, especially the North Africa countries are well positioned to benefits far more from the gains of AFCFTA, because of their consistent quest for global competitiveness with enviable commitment to:
1. Robust and wider global certification and accreditation presence
2. Unmatched logistic interconnectivity and infrastructures for bulk raw materials
3. One stop market and hub for accessing, connecting Arab countries and Europe
It behooves all concerned institutions to rejig their policy and be more proactive in ensuring every stakeholders are wooed, in ensuring this marriage with other regions on the continent is a big plus to the #extractive sector.
