How much of this text could you retain if we asked you to read it and recall some details? Really, read the text. At the ResearchEd conference, the most frequent response was: ‘I could retain 1-2%’. That’s a super-important insight! Why don’t we retain what we read in this text? We have no schema about the topic, which is cricket. The text isn’t linguistically complex. We just don’t have the background knowledge to make sense of it. Our background knowledge about a topic determines our ability to comprehend what we read, and to acquire new knowledge on that topic. Once we have a schema for cricket, we can process new information about the sport much more readily. Fun to see Jim Heal present about the importance of knowledge to learning at the ResearchEd conference yesterday. Mark your calendars for the next ResearchEd conference in Delaware in October… it’s a really special conference, focused squarely on learning science.
