As Millennials and Gen Z take over the workforce, understanding their communication style is becoming a superpower. Here's what I've learned from experience and some clever studies: Millennials are all about those meaty, purposeful conversations. Skip the small talk and hit 'em with facts, data and truth. They've seen some stuff (hello, 2008 crisis) and need proof to trust. Gen Z? They're the kings and queens of instant messaging. Surprise them with an unexpected call, and you'll see panic in their eyes like you've just asked them to perform brain surgery! They crave deep talks but need your full attention. Half-listening while checking your phone? They'll smell it a mile away. I guess this is universal, though Gen Zs are more emotional and strict about it. And don't get me started on work-life boundaries. Millennials are cool with a 22:00 email, while Gen Z might think you're declaring war on their personal time. The real kicker? Gen Z is bringing emojis and slang to work emails. 🤯 (Did I use that right?) 🎭 Plot twist! While these generational trends are a great starting point, let's not forget we're dealing with actual humans. There's overlapping distribution between generations, so before you go full "OK Millennial" or start peppering your emails with "rizz", think. The real pro move? Figuring out what makes each person tick, regardless of their birth year. It's like being a communication chameleon - adapt, blend in, and maybe have a little fun along the way. Let’s run through tips on how top US companies like FAANG motivate Generation Z: 1/ Digital-first convo: Gen Z prefers digital platforms like Slack and instant messaging apps for communication. Studies [NDMU, Berkeley Exec Ed] show that Gen Z prefers rapid, digital communication (65%), while Millennials still value in-person conversations or social media, for example. → Top tip: benefit from custom corporate stickers for Slack. This is an additional way to instill your culture and values natively. 2/ Feedback properly: Pew Research Center found that Gen Z prioritizes frequent feedback and clear communication of goals (transparency) even more than Millennials. They value quick wins (achievements delivered rapidly) and crave a sense of accomplishment. That’s why FAANG breaks down their traditional grading system into smaller “pieces”. 3/ Provide purpose: Highlight how their work impacts the world. They seek meaningful contributions. But maybe (only maybe) it’s not that, it's that they want work that matters. 👇Same message, different format Imagine you need to tell both generation reps about a new company policy. Here's how the message might differ: → For Millennials: A concise email or Slack message with a clear outlining the policy's benefits and offering a chance to ask questions in person or during an AMA meeting. → For Gen Z: A short, engaging video with clear visuals and a casual tone highlighting the policy's impact on their work and a quick poll to gather feedback through a collaborative tool like Slack or a platform like Donut for informal mentorship opportunities. #genz #communications #youth #hr #employees

Yeah, it's true – I've got a short attention span. 🙃   Could it be because I'm a Millennial? Maybe. But you're probably aware of the latest research indicating that individuals from Gen Z possess even briefer attention spans, right? 🌟 While Millennials tend to lose focus after 12 minutes, those in Gen Z can only hold on for about 8 minutes. 🌟 What am I getting at here? They need content not only to be relevant but also engaging. ❌ When you throw content at them in a language they don't grasp well, you're just adding to their cognitive load. 😰 This, in turn, takes a toll on their motivation levels, making it harder for them to stay invested in the material. Is it acceptable to be a Gen Zer without having millennial traits? Of course!   I'm a Gen Zer with millennial tendencies, so I'm frequently behind on the newest lingo and trends on Instagram. For example, I think it's better to say "you did well" instead of "you ate it" because the latter seems overly dramatic. This raises a question for me: Is respect still due to millennial methods, or do we need to embrace Gen Z behaviours in order to function in today's society?   Is there anyone else who can relate? Recently, I came across an article on Channel News Asia discussing how Gen Zs and Millennials, like myself, tend to prefer text-based communications like emails, texts, and apps like Zoom and WhatsApp over traditional phone calls. 📱 This really resonated with me and got me reflecting on my own experiences both as a producer and (currently) as an account executive at SuperPixel ... We've navigated entire sales cycles and streamlined production processes that satisfy our tech-savvy clients' needs for quick and efficient interactions. This approach not only speeds things up but also keeps everything crystal clear. ✨ However, a recent interaction with a prospective client reminded me of the importance of versatility in communication styles. They preferred more traditional methods—phone calls and face-to-face meetings. Though I was happy to accommodate, it definitely took some getting used to. 😅 This shift from my usual digital-centric approach was enlightening. It highlighted that while I gravitate towards quick, text-based communications, being adaptable and responsive to the unique preferences of each client is crucial. 🤝 This experience has deepened my appreciation for personal connections and the importance of meeting people where they are most comfortable. For the past few weeks, I have been writing about Gen Z vocabulary covering Skibidi, Fanum Tax, Rizz etc. Seeing this old world instrument made me want to do a reverse uno card. This lovely blue piece of nostalgia makes me want to do an explainer for the Gen Z / Late Millennial audience :). What you see here is a telephone from the 1990s. Believe it or not!, this is what our phones used to look like. The amount of Nostaligia, Childhood, Old world charm that this instrument conjures up in the memory of early millennials and Gen X population is unbelievable. It also makes me think about the effect images and words have on different generations. It is fascinating how differently visuals affect people across different generations.
