This is on #genderequality & gender roles: I have always been outspoken about dads pulling their weight on child rearing duties... I have also walked the talk, having taken unpaid parental leave three times for all of my three children for multiple months at a time - which in 2012 wasn't the done thing for men - let alone those with people or revenue responsibility. So receiving messages like this one make me feel proud about the influence I have been able to have on some of my fellow dudes: "I remember you talking about this during our C Space time, creating awareness that parental leave should be a thing for everyone... I really took that with me on my latest job search. Using it as key criteria was one of the best career decisions I've ever made because now that I have this time I really can't imagine what it would have been like not being there, not supporting my wife, not having time to bond and just be there." The lesson: Take #ParentalLeave. Talk about it in the public domain. Especially if you are in a position of power.

My job is giving life and lift to other people’s stories. But now it’s time to draw from my own. Pinch is what happens when two best friends and working moms come together and recognize that parental leave coverage isn’t working (great). As a teammate, as a direct report, as a manager and a mother– I’ve seen all sides of the equation. Too often the answer to parental leave is a hodge-podge of distributed work, outsourced effort and halted priorities. And this comes at the expense of teams, partners, businesses and importantly, the new parents themselves. We can help. Pinch is a consultancy designed specifically to support parents (and their managers) in communications and marketing during parental leave. Strategic, senior talent to come in, make you look good in the meantime, and set you up for success when you’re back. If you’re expecting, expect more (and talk to me and Angela D'Arcy!) 📲 📧 👋

Two years! Today marks two full years of doing work that I love at Parentaly. Feels like just yesterday I hopped on a flight to Chicago to meet the team on my first day. I was our fifth employee and first marketing hire. And helping grow this company into what it is today has been the most rewarding and exciting years of my career yet: 🥹 Thousands of parents coached and managers trained on navigating parental leave transitions 💪 Hundreds of conversations with HR leaders looking to improve the parental leave experience for their employees 🤩 Tens of thousands of folks in our universe who support our mission to make the workplace better for parent employees & their teams These numbers remind me that what we’re doing - what I’ve helped build these last two years - really matters. Not gonna lie, before finding Parentaly…this idea of career-focused parental leave programming never crossed my mind. I knew being a working parent was hard, but I didn’t think twice about WHY I struggled when I returned to work after having kids. So as I celebrate two years in a job I’m passionate about, I’m also reflecting on why it’s worth celebrating in the first place: Because I’m really proud to be part of a team focused on helping parents thrive at work and home. 🫶

❗ THIS IS VERY REAL. While this leader's actions may be the extreme case the message here is: "going on parental leave impacts people's career trajectories." I have seen numerous cases where parents were laid off while on parental leave (or the first day back from) OR were not considered for promotions because they: a) are on leave, b) are about to go on leave, c) have small children and their leaders don't think they can fully commit to the role because it conflicts with parenting commitments, OR were leading a team before going on leave and the company brought them back from leave as an individual contributor where they needed to "work back up" to leading a team again. 📣 We must do more for people who choose to parent. And we must do more SPECIFICALLY to keep WOMEN in the workplace and in leadership positions if we are ever going to get to equality in the workplace.
“When I announced I was pregnant, my boss proceeded to leave a magazine article on my desk that addressed why your boss hates your maternity leave.” – Professional engineer Taking parental leave shouldn't impact your career trajectory—it's a valuable experience during which skill development and personal growth flourish.
