One of the first things you learn in journalism school is to be quiet. Here’s why:
People hate silence, especially the subject of an interview. So they tend to keep talking, a propensity I often refer to as “diarrhea of the mouth” and that’s usually when you get your best material. This method has tripped up CEOs, military leaders, heads of government agencies, you name it. It’s in the silence that the interviewee tends to say something unplanned, something they wish they hadn’t.
Last night’s “interview” with Kamala Harris on Fox News was a debate with a stand-in, not an interview. He kept talking over her and interrupting to push his own agenda, not to give her the rope to potentially trip up or even find out something new. He was the heckler at his own show.
Few interviewees will face that kind of situation, thankfully. Most reporters understand you get better info when you listen, not speak. But it’s important to be ready for both situations as I cover in my media training.
