What an incredible time we had at the AsiaBerlin Summit 2024! 🌏 Being part of this event at the historic Rotes Rathaus was nothing short of amazing. It was all about connecting internationally, sharing ideas, and building meaningful relationships with incredible people from around the world. We also got to pitch Talonic in front of this great audience! Sharing our vision and getting feedback from global innovators was very valuable. 🚀 It was fantastic to catch up with the brilliant team from Maruti Suzuki Innovation as well —always a pleasure to see familiar faces and exchange ideas. ⚽🎵 "It's coming home, it's coming home (?)" ⚽🎵 But is BYD also coming home ? 🚀 Exciting times ahead for BYD (Build Your Dreams) as they took bold steps towards international expansion! 🌍 BYD is not only making waves in the automotive industry but also setting a strong presence on the global stage by sponsoring two major sporting events: Euro 2024 and Copa America 2024. 🏆 This strategic move, with sponsorships costing millions, raises key questions: How will these investments impact BYD's brand metrics and KPIs? Will markets in Europe and America become more receptive to this new manufacturer? According to a study we (The BVA Family) conducted at the end of 2023, overall brand awareness of BYD was relatively low in key European markets: - 26% in France - 49% in Germany - 33% in the UK The study highlighted two key issues for new Asian entrants to the European market: Brand Recognition: Little was known about the brands and their models. Perception as Outsiders: They were seen as threats to traditional manufacturers. This was addressed in the US when they recently announced a 100% tax on Chinese manufacturers and a similar rhetoric exists in Europe. Initial results are promising: AutoTraderSA reported a 69% week-on-week increase in views of BYD models on its UK website during the first weekend of the Euro 2024, highlighting the potential impact of such sponsorships. But let's see if BYD’s sponsorship of these major events helps overcome these challenges and changes public perception. Here’s what they did right: 1️⃣ Understanding Local Needs: Honda didn’t impose a global strategy. Instead, they listened—understanding Africa’s unique challenges, from rough terrains to affordability constraints. 2️⃣ Adapting Products: They introduced durable, cost-effective bikes suited for the African landscape. These weren’t high-end models but solutions that created value for everyday users. 3️⃣ Building Trust Locally: Honda’s partnerships with local communities and leaders turned them into a trusted brand, not just a foreign company. This story resonated deeply with me, especially as we scale Keerai Kadai Ventures into newer markets. Whether it's refining our product, testing a new feature, or rethinking our go-to-market strategy, moving quickly has been a game changer. Their rackets at the same price point today does feel lighter and better than when I used to play in school.
