I cringe when I read an organization tell a potential grant funder: "If our agency doesn't receive these funds, we won’t be able to run our program." When explaining the importance of funding, focus on how the additional resources will expand your organization’s impact rather than stating the program's existence hinges on a grant award. Frame your ask strategically to highlight the added value of the funds: “With a current program staff of two, we are able to serve 30-40 clients effectively. However, the demand for our services continues to grow, as evidenced by our waitlist of over 20 individuals. Additional funding for staffing will allow us to extend housing stability services to even more families in need within our region.” This language shows that your agency is proactive, capable, and ready to support people who need it the most while maintaining sustainability, which ensures the grant funder's confidence as they are much more inclined to partner with your organization.
