Why would a tech entrepreneur who’s set up three software companies not have a smartphone? It’s a question I’ve wondered a lot when spending time with our CEO Andy Beverley, who’s written this fantastic blog. Andy has always been passionate about technology - he cut his teeth as an engineering officer in the Royal Navy for a decade, running the IT for three years on the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. Andy’s always been an early adopter of technology, but he now uses an old Nokia for calls and texts, and a laptop for work. This blog goes a long way to explaining why. In the military, Andy did all his work in an office, and learnt to be very efficient. He asks if working that way was better for efficiency than the more flexible working that we have today … to be discussed!

Great (if brief) piece on Kursk offensive. Hits multiple important themes - Maneuver x UAS x EW x competitive iteration x time. DoD planners have spoken for decades about an expectation of only having "bubbles" of air superiority. Those moments are crucial to restoring maneuver to the battlefield, and the hope (illusion?) of decisive battle. In warfare time is of the essence. I worked on Combat Direction Systems for the #USN for over 20 years, and a lot of these trends have been developing for decades. #CEC in many ways the successor or supplementer to NTDS, allowed a multiplatform naval/marine force to operate in real time as a single organism. In this article consultant Dr. Alix Valenti discusses the evolution of naval Combat Management Systems (#CMS) in response to the increasing speed and complexity of modern maritime threats across multiple domains. Key points include: 1. Navies must leverage information from a variety of sensors across domains to gain information, decision, and action superiority. 2. CMS need open architectures to rapidly integrate new technologies and third-party functionalities throughout a ship's lifecycle. 3. Integration of unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles into CMS is crucial for expanding situational awareness but presents challenges related to autonomy, communication links, and regulatory constraints. 4. Collaborative engagement capabilities, such as the U.S. Navy's Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) and the European Defence Fund's Naval Collaborative Surveillance (#NCS), enable real-time sensor data sharing among coalition platforms to improve tactical situational awareness and resilience. 5. Advancements in #artificialintelligence, #machinelearning, and potentially quantum computing are expected to support operators in processing large volumes of data for faster decision-making.
