A BIG shout out to William Renner and the students at Hastings Middle School in Hastings, Michigan. We see you!! Mr. Renner is one of those inspiring teachers who actively finds innovative learning opportunities for his students. This summer his students in the MI-Trades Program learned how to build dog houses, which were later sold and proceeds donated back to the MI-Trades Program for continuing support. This school year, his students learned about AI and robotics the best way possible: by building ABii robots! According to one student: “What I liked about the project was that I made something new that I never thought I was going to do, and I also liked that I learned a lot of things. I learned how some of the parts of the robot work together that will help kids in the future and hopefully expand their options for learning.” The ABiis they built are now at Hastings Elementary School, providing one-on-one help for their students. Meet my kid's combat robot, after it got clobbered in a fight. My kid teaches me so much, as he shows up and these parts get shredded, shattered, and battered, and he can't wait to go to the next match. What he is learning: 📲 Call for help, from your competitors even. I'm amazed at the collegiately, interest, and collaboration from these competitors. They model what you want coopetition to be. 🌩 Bring the thunder, every time. Enjoy those moments between the matches, but when it's your time in the arena, focus and bring the A game. 🏆 Wins come in MANY forms. We've talked about his, but he's finally beginning to look for the different kinds of wins he can have at a tournament, playing against better-built bots and more experienced drivers. What I am learning: 🕰 Patience. It's going to take time for him to want to work on the bots and do the repairs himself. Also, I'm gonna have to let go of control. 🎢 Enjoy the ride. The time between matches is INTENSE, needing to completely rebuild the bot to get ready to fight again. I forget to eat. ALSO, I'm falling in love again with my junior high self who loved science and engineering and building. Both of us are learning: 👩👦 New ways of playing together. He's getting older, and that means we have to evolve what fun mother-kiddo time looks like. I'm grateful he's willing to explore with me. 🛠 A *ton* about a highly technical thing. 3D printing, here we come... What does this have to do with #teamcoaching and my #nonprofit work?
