ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research Europe is one the most relevant conferences of the year if you care about equitable patient access to novel medicines👇 Europe because we luckily have solidarity-based healthcare systems, so the room tends to be full of people who deeply care about solidarity, equity and sustainability in our social systems (and who don't tend to mix this up with political ideologies which is a relief). And as European, I am personally grateful for that- and there a few individuals I hold in very high personal regard for that matter- you know who you are 🙏 . That does not mean I always agree with the approach. Patients are the weakest link in our systems. It's easy to talk about 'saving healthcare costs' when you are healthy and don't need that very healthcare and rather want to invest that money into your pension (or your holidays). The moment you are the patient- you desperately need that system to work and access to diagnostics and therapies that at least have a chance of helping you. So that weak evidence- high price conundrum? I would rather call that a Gordian knot. Anyone who follows the system- or who is at its mercy- knows that this isn't about evidence, really. Once the basics are fulfilled, meaning pharmacovigilance- no company nor authority would survive another Thalidomide today- anything else is a bonus. And as predictable as a Hallmark Christmas movie 'go in with the highest possible what the market will bear' 'oh NO, such an insult, show us the eternal OS and no QoL!' 'oh no, the drug hasn't been around for that long but we've got some PFS with some alternative PROs' *some sophisticated modelling and dubious subgroup picking later* - some odd access only accessible to the most sophisticated, informed and driven oncs in tertiary centres- 'thank god, there are other ways to regulated budget impact'. We know what happened to the Gordian knot...... so I personally have some very high expectations that, considering circumstances. e.g. the HTAR and Draghi, there will be some really interesting discussions going beyond the usual exchange of platitudes and then, some finger-pointing- but actually some real ideas how to square that circle. Or rather- how to cut that knot. #Looking_forward #time_for_change

Life sciences are hugely important to Europe, as a major contributor to health improvement and to the economy. To support jobs, excellent research, patient outcomes and more, it's essential that countries can secure life sciences investments, and help achieve the EU's aim to place Europe as a leader in life sciences. The 'Attracting Life Science Investments in Europe report - Fourth Edition, 2023' - an initiative of the BioMed Alliance, EuropaBio and Johnson & Johnson - highlights why a coherent life sciences ecosystem matters, to the EU, to Europe, and to patient outcomes, and includes two key areas for action: Firstly, the findings show that here is an urgent need to close the growing gap between Europe, China and the US in life science performance.
