✨The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) is a unique bird of prey widespread across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Unlike typical raptors, it specializes in feeding on the larvae, nests, and adults of wasps and bees. Equipped with a sturdy beak and tough skin around the head, it can efficiently dismantle nests without suffering stings. 👉Honey buzzards have long, broad wings and a distinctive flight pattern, characterized by slow, deliberate wing beats and soaring glides.Their plumage is highly variable, aiding in camouflage and sometimes mimicking other raptors, which may deter predators. 👉During breeding, they prefer deciduous or mixed forests, often nesting in high trees. They undertake a remarkable migration each year, traveling from their breeding grounds in Europe to wintering sites in tropical Africa. 👉This journey is notable for its length and the challenges posed by crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert. Sydney's Gamay Indigenous Rangers are working with Macquarie University scientists to conduct the first comprehensive marine mammal survey in Botany Bay, one of Australia’s most industrialised areas. This collaboration blends the Rangers' traditonal knowledge of the region’s marine ecosystems with scientific research methods, focusing on the movements and populations of dolphins, whales, seals, and other species that inhabit the area. Historical mistrust between Indigenous communities and scientists due to issues such as lack of informed consent has made such collaborations challenging. However, the Gamay Rangers, led by Robert Cooley and Bryce Liddell, decided to engage scientists they trust to share appropriate cultural knowledge. The goal is not only to learn more about the wildlife but to build long-term relationships and repair past damages. This approach mirrors the work of the NLC Rangers in Northern Australia, where collaborations with academia focus on marine mammal surveys, seagrass restoration, and rock art preservation. I believe these partnerships are critical but really need to be driven grassroots level up with research needs to be identified by Traditional Owners so that free, roper, informed consent principles have primacy. We still have a way to go ...... Want to add a top pollinator plant to your landscape or outdoor space this year? Last year I was hooked, watching the butterflies, bees, wasps and hoverflies that were attracted to this white buddleia bush. At any one time I counted 50+ butterflies of 7 different species! On top of this there were huge numbers of bees mainly honey bees and bumblebees. Lots of hoverflies. Wasps hunting hoverflies (one of my favourite interactions to observe). And I was treated to a spectacle that was a lone hornet hunting butterflies very persistently for a few days (fascinating to watch). So much invertebrate activity happening around a single shrub. I highly recommend and haven't seen there to be any issues with self seeding of white buddleias. Where could you add some pollinator plants to your site this year? Birders, it’s time to get busy! We’re entering the final TWO breeding seasons of the North Carolina Bird Atlas. Priority blocks set the Atlas apart. In contrast to annual, un-directed eBird checklists, priority blocks are evenly spread across the state, representing every habitat used by breeding and wintering birds. With enough birding in every priority block, we’ll have the most comprehensive and detailed look at breeding and wintering distributions of birds ever compiled in NC. Because atlasing requires a level of bird identification and behavior knowledge to be able to accurately record observations in the field, we’re calling on experienced birders to help with this important state-wide initiative. This cute kitty may look like your average moggie, but they're actually the British Isles' only remaining wild feline: the wildcat. Still common across Europe, the wildcat was also once found across most of the British Isles - but now, they're only hanging on to a few remaining patches of Scotland by the tips of their claws. Threatened by habitat loss and hybridization with domestic cats, wildcats are a main focus of conservation efforts in Scotland through breeding and release programs as well as neutering of feral domestic cats. The pawsitive news? These tabbies have the potential to make a comeback across other parts of the British Isles. The Southwest Wildcat Project, for example, is conducting feasibility studies on the possibility of bringing them back to Devon. Botany Bay’s seagrass meadows are a critical habitat for marine life such as seahorses, fish, and turtles. However, human activities have significantly impacted these ecosystems over time. Restoration efforts, including initiatives by the University of NSW, Sydney Marine Institute, and Gamay Rangers through Operation Posidonia, are helping to recover these vital habitats. Bayside Council supports these efforts as part of the Love Our Bay campaign in the Summer Foreshore Program.
