Any company that goes to shows has the same question. "How do we attract people to our booth?" What I've found time and again is that people love to have fun. The Kando booth at Apartmentalize 2024 was a LOT of fun. Besides for a basketball hoop with prizes for getting baskets, we raffled off some pretty epic prizes. We raffled off AirPods, FitBits, putting mats, Amazon gift cards, a Meta Quest 2, and an iPad Air. What can I say, it worked! We had crowds of attendees at our booth. How do you make your booth an attraction at shows?

This is such a missed opportunity, and for me another sign that Apple just isn’t interested in being great anymore. From a brutal operational point of view (ahem Tim Cook) the stickers are all cost without the ROI in goodwill. It hardly makes you edgy to have an apple device anymore and I find stickers everwhere when I clean out my desk (I’ve purchased an embarassing number of Apple devices over my lifetime). Every penny (fractional penny?) counts at their scale and volume of annual sales across their hardware portfolio, but they are missing the point. When Apple got its mojo back in the late 90s, they were on the ropes. They had just launched the iMac line and Steve Jobs and his creative partners rolled out the “Think Different” campaign. At that time, I was a multimedia teacher working in a severely under resourced school and had just purchased five Imacs with money that I had raised with Family. Those think different posters went up in my classroom immediately and I regret not keeping them because they were an inspiration for me, and my students, and influenced the future course of my career. Back then I was appologetic of my Dyslexia, embarassed by it, and that campaign took on new meaning for me years later when I learned that Steve and nearly everyone else featured in those posters that came randomly in the box …they were all Dyslexic or neurodiverse too. They LITTERALLY “Think Different” (and yes word nerds, the dyslexic knows that isn’t grammatically, correct - you and Tim Cook can resume being practical now). What if instead of killing the stickers, they doubled down? What if instead of the same sticker in every box, for every device, the stickers were limited editions, collectable, some may even have very limited runs - trading cards did it. Apple owners hold onto their boxes for their devices for years! At one point, people would film unboxing parties when they got a new Mac or iPhone, it’s a whole genre of online influencer. Apple - please go back to thinking different. You can’t get by forever with ham fisted TV spots and building aggressively bland, inoffensive, and overpriced products. Even minimalism can be excessive. Bring the fun back to tech - I mean, who doesn’t love a good sticker?
