♻️ How to accelerate the transformation of the plastics value chain from a linear to a circular system? Plastics Europe (PlasticsEurope Deutschland e. V.) is convinced that the most effective way to achieve this change is for plastic waste to be treated as a valuable raw material by the UN Plastics Convention. The more valuable plastic waste is, the more incentives there are to reuse and recycle it instead of throwing it away, incinerating it or sending it to landfill. Virginia Janssens, Managing Director, Plastics Europe therefore emphasizes "[...] we urge negotiators to focus on policy measures that will increase the value of plastic waste as a circular feedstock by increasing demand for circular plastic raw materials [...]". Ambitious global policy action across the plastics lifecycle (to curb production and demand, design for circularity, enhance recycling and close leakage pathways) can decouple economic growth from plastics use, quadruple the average global recycling rate (from 9.5% in 2020 to 42% in 2040) and nearly end the leakage of plastic waste to the environment (96% reduction from business as usual) by 2040. https://lnkd.in/dkaeNarR

AMBR's policy director, Lucy Mullany, is presenting at the Northeast Recycling Council conference today on plastics-to-fuel technologies – dubbed "chemical recycling" by the petrochemical industry. The TL;DR of her presentation is this: Turning plastic into fuel does not reduce the demand for virgin plastic and should not be considered recycling. By focusing on chemical recycling or any "quick fix" solution to the plastic pollution crisis, we risk delaying the systemic changes needed to build a circular economy. Instead, we must prioritize investments in reuse, ban the most problematic and nonrecyclable materials, and look upstream to eliminate single-use plastic and transition to reuse. ♻

I found this interview on the Plastic Industry so dissappointing on many levels. It made me think, when is the time for people supporting industry to challenge it more? It seems when the money's flowing our ideals are left behind. -The U.S. alone generates tens of millions of tons of plastic waste annually, while only recycling about 5 to 6 percent of it.- Shame! -It highlights a new report revealing the plastic industry's historical skepticism about recycling's efficacy, with executives acknowledging doubts about meeting recycling goals and viewing it more as a public relations tool than an environmental solution.
