As part of their focus on sustainability Caroboo, makers of delicious gluten and dairy-free chocolatey bars, have just upgraded their wrappers. The 100% recyclable paper wrapper is made with #hydropol which enables consumers to dispose of the wrapper in normal paper recycling at home. It will replace the home-compostable packaging the brand currently uses. Charlotte Miller founder at Carobooo said "We are really excited to take advantage of this innovative new material and will be switching all our products to the paper packaging over the next three months." The packaging was manufactured by EvoPak and will be available very soon in Holland & Barrett. #packaginginnovation #hydropol #aquapak #recyclemore https://lnkd.in/ed6T8e58

Innovative low-waste packaging for plant-based mayo Unilever’s Hellmann’s brand has introduced new squeeze bottle technology for its plant-based mayo, designed to maximise usability and reduce waste. The innovative ‘easy out’ technology features an edible, vegan coating inside the bottle, preventing the mayo from sticking and ensuring more product is dispensed. This redesign addresses consumer demand for minimal leftover product, enhancing user satisfaction and reducing both food and packaging waste. Research has indicated a significant consumer concern for food waste, with Hellmann’s aiming to support this through its ‘Make Taste, Not Waste’ campaign. The new bottles, made with 100% recycled plastic where feasible, also aid in the recycling process by keeping residual mayo to a minimum. As the plant-based market is expected to double by 2030, this advancement supports the continued growth of Hellmann’s plant-based product range. The new low-waste bottles will be available in the UK and Ireland in 2024, with plans to expand to the rest of Europe thereafter. 🎉 Kudos to MasterFoods for Innovation! 🎉 https://lnkd.in/gxqXrcPX I was thrilled to read about MasterFoods trialing new paper-based packaging for their products – a bold move demonstrating their commitment to reducing single-use plastics. 👏 Innovation like this is essential as we navigate the complex path to a more sustainable future. That said, while the shift to paper-based solutions is commendable, I can’t help but raise a potential concern: What happens to the tomato sauce residue in the paper recycling stream? 🍅🧴 Paper recycling facilities are often not equipped to handle food contamination, and the presence of residues can compromise the recyclability of the material. This raises a larger question about whether such solutions inadvertently shift environmental burdens from one stream to another. We’re eager to learn more from this trial, as the insights gained will no doubt shape the future of how single-use foodservice items are recovered and recycled. Understanding these real-world outcomes is key to ensuring that innovations in fiber based packaging deliver the intended environmental benefits. 🌍 I’d love to hear others' thoughts: 👉 Are there emerging solutions to address food contamination in paper recycling? Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging, but also ensure we’re asking the hard questions. 🌍💡 #Sustainability #PackagingInnovation #CircularEconomy #RecyclingChallenges

milkadamia, an Australia-origin brand known for its macadamia-based products, has introduced a novel approach to sustainable packaging with its Flat Pack Organic Oat Milk. The Flat Pack comprises dehydrated oat milk sheets produced through a unique 2D-printing process. Each pack includes eight sheets, which, when mixed with water, can produce up to half a gallon (1.89 litres) of oat milk. This innovation aims to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of oat milk packaging by reducing packaging waste by 94% and shipping weight by 85%. This approach also lowers the resources needed for transportation, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional liquid packaging. The Flat Pack is designed to be lightweight and compact, making it easier to transport and store while maintaining the product’s quality and shelf life. This product is expected to hit retail shelves and online by January 2025. #packaging #innovation #sustainabelpackaging

Upcycling is having its moment⌛Converting side streams into new ingredients for the food industry reduces waste and enhances product sustainability. Jussi Loponen, Vice President of Fazer Group research and innovation unit called Fazer Lab, took part in an online panel discussion of industry experts about upcycled ingredients, focusing on how innovators could maintain a consistent supply of raw materials and the challenges of launching new products. Fazer Lab team explores new sustainable and healthy food solutions for the future. However, one of the fundamental questions is whether consumers want – and understand – upcycled food? As a consumer-centric company Fazer has tested the market with limited-edition confectionery, Taste the Future Oat choco toffee hearts, which was made with two upcycled components: okara, a side stream of oat drink production, and the other from our own confectionery production, from broken or underweight Karl Fazer oat choco tablets. Consumers were informed to the product’s upcycled content via an upcycled label on-pack.🤎 “Consumers confuse upcycling with recycling and find it ambiguous without explanation. Terms like 'upcycled' and 'side streams' are largely unfamiliar. Many consumers view upcycling as a positive and innovative concept, trusting that food companies are already minimising and reusing food waste. Nonetheless, much communication is required to enhance awareness and understanding of upcycling", says Jussi Loponen. A recent study by Red Note revealed that consumer awareness of upcycling is low. While sustainability holds at least some importance for many consumers, those who are particularly focused on sustainability represent a smaller segment, with 14% in Finland and 21% in Sweden. The panel discussion "Upcycled Ingredients: Risks and Opportunities of Turning Trash into Treasure" on September 25th was part of the Climate Smart Food Digital Summit 2024, hosted by FoodNavigator – online B2B multimedia. #upcycled #fazerlab #futurefood #innovations #fazertastethefuture #foodnavigatorsummit #Northernmagicmadereal
