It's NAIDOC week, and this year's theme is Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, Loud, and Proud. This years theme focuses on celebrating the cultural resilience of First Nations people, their profound connection to the land and traditions, and their pride in their First Nation identity. "It embodies our purpose, calling us to celebrate and honour the strength and vitality of our cultures."   As an organisation, we have been putting to task the recommendations from NAIDOC - here’s three things you can do:    - Check your local council for events: https://lnkd.in/dexeVKVM - If you cannot attend an in-person event, here are other ways to participate: Follow and engage with First Nations creators online, attend online events, and watch movies and shows featuring First Nations stories. Grateful for last week’s intense, insightful three days at the Nordkom event in Oslo. Kudos and special thanks for the Norway team for arranging such a superb event for us! Nordkom is a biannual conference for comms people in the Nordic churches. It provides us a valuable platform to compare notes, share insights and learning on each other’s comms activities (It is striking how similar challenges we have!) The previous Nordkom took place in Copenhagen in 2022, in the aftermath of corona. Compared to that meeting, the tone and outlook for the future was now notably more sombre, close to dismal. When visiting the fantastic Munch Museum, many of us found Edvard Munch’s most famous painting "The Scream" disturbingly current. We were craving for the presentors to end their talk with a message of hope and optimism, but this they couldn’t and wouldn’t commit to. Yet we are the organization whose mission is to help and support, to talk about faith and love, to bring solace and hope. What could be the role of church in the ever-secularizing society? Rising economic and social inequality has caused erosion of the dignity of work, said Kai Eide, a former Norwegian diplomat and politician in his powerful presentation. The market defines our worth in society, and we’ve moved from collective responsibility to cultivation of individualism. This has caused polarisation of politics and of our society. We’re in democratic and moral recession, he said, and in urgent need for spiritual awakening. We need to say, “value others”. Pretty close to "love your neighbour"? We also discussed the political situation, war in Ukraine and Middle East, economy, and the fact that the climate crisis does not get the attention it should. This is a huge worry for especially young people. Young people face uncertainties that challenge the peace, the bright future, we once took for granted. It is such a disappointment that we cannot promise future generations a better life than what we now have. On the third Nordkom day comms director Pia Dahlén presented the case of cyber attack against the Church of Sweden. Other organisations such as schools and hospitals were also attacked. An example how organized crime moves across borders and is intertwined with politics. We also discussed the ethical, philosophical and theological considerations of AI. We heard case studies from Folkekirken (Denmark) & TikTok campaigns in Norway, in an attempt to reach Generation Z. "Reaching" in the meaning of the word that the young people would at least _become aware_ of the fact that if they want to talk with a safe adult, they can always go to church,talk with a pastor. My conclusion: however big our challenges, they can be overcome. The Lutheran churches can have a major role in sustaining hope and resilience in the society. Anti-racism has never been so vital (and this is a particularly serious post). Equity isn’t always well understood, but our work at The Equity Charter can be understood as instilling anti-racism into our organisations, whether in our daily interactions, how leaders lead, policies and processes, digital transformations, teams and recruitment, R&D, products and services, procurement, datasets, outcomes etc. Imagine what happens if we succeed. The stakes have never felt higher in my lifetime. I don’t write this lightly; the recent racist disorder, looting, violence, and riots may initially have been aimed at Muslims and asylum seekers (plus the police and immigration lawyers), but the hate soon spread wider. It was disgusting how Black communities were targeted too, and it feels like things may never be the same again. See this quote [from https://lnkd.in/eEuDzuz9]: “Olivette Otele, Professor of the Legacies and Memory of Slavery at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, said what stood out in the riots was that the mainly white instigators were very specific about who they were targeting. "They were attacking immigrants, migrants, asylum seekers, people of African heritage, British Muslims. So, it's very specific," Otele added. "The kind of discourse was about wanting their country back, but people they were attacking were British, so it means that they have a certain outlook on what British looks like." I am deeply proud of the fightback by communities who stood firm against the fascists, but this episode left many shaken, and questioning. I’m not exaggerating here; it’s not uncommon to hear questions like ‘do we have a future in the UK’, ‘where else would we be welcome’, or ‘do we need a plan B’. In the face of such hate, we must ask what each of us can do. Our digital health community is no exception. Our recent Equity Charter Summit at The King’s Fund gathered a select group of invited thought leaders and experts across digital health, EDI, and procurement. Our intention was to establish a ‘brave space’ to debate what an Equity Charter should look like, and also which resources should accompany it to ensure the Charter isn't simply words on a page. The work may have began with 3 people, but it felt like the mission was now owned by a community, ready to fight for equity. Our plan is taking shape but we still need your support.
