Onboarding isn’t just about getting new hires up to speed—it’s your first chance to show them they’re a valued part of the team. The process should begin before their first day with proactive steps like sharing an outline of their first week and sending a welcome package. A structured schedule for their initial days, including tours, introductions, and a clear explanation of job responsibilities, helps set the tone for long-term success. Beyond logistics, effective onboarding creates a sense of belonging. Assigning mentors and focusing on personalized training ensures new hires feel supported while building skills tailored to their roles. A well-designed onboarding program doesn’t just improve productivity; it enhances engagement and retention, turning new employees into committed team members. Onboarding, however, goes deeper, providing ongoing support and resources to help new hires fully integrate into their roles. While orientation may last a day or two, onboarding continues for weeks or even months, ensuring new employees are set up for long-term success. Both are crucial, but effective onboarding builds a stronger foundation for growth and retention. I was co-facilitating a two day onboarding session last week. It had been designed in part for people to learn more about their department but a large element of it was to provide in-person opportunities to build new relationships and space to connect across a geographically dispersed, multi-lingual group of people. It was great to see connections being made over the two days and everyone I spoke with told me that this experience helped them feel cared about by the organisation in a way they hadn't in previous companies. How we onboard new hires says such a lot about how we treat our employees generally and can make a huge difference to engagement, productivity and attrition. Bringing a strength lens to onboarding is really helpful because when people are recognised for their strengths, it means they are accepted and valued for their authentic selves and what they bring to an organisation and it helps with that all-important engagement metric of getting to use our strengths at work. Have a think about your own onboarding experiences - are there ones that stand out for being brilliant, or terrible? What made them so? And what about how you are onboarding new starters? What would make this experience more valuable for people? If you'd like to chat about how you could bring strengths into your onboarding process then drop me line. coachinginflow.co.uk #strengthsatwork #leadingwithstrengths #onbaording

First impressions matter! — especially when it comes to onboarding new team members. Nobody wants their first day to feel like a mix between an awkward blind date and being thrown into an escape room without the clues! A great onboarding process sets the tone for everything that comes next, builds confidence, and makes new hires feel like they’re truly part of the team from day one. Interlink's global onboarding process has been getting fantastic feedback from the team so I thought I would share our recipe for a great experience: Pre-boarding magic 🪄: Make those awkward weeks between offer and start date engaging with personal check-ins and a welcome package. It’s about keeping the excitement alive. Clarity from the get-go 📋: Understanding each department in the company and setting clear expectations about roles, responsibilities, and goals makes a huge difference. Who likes surprises when it comes to job roles? Not us. The human touch 🤝: It’s simple but true—people join people. We have some helpful tech to onboard and support the learning journey but introductions to managers, team members, and our culture helps new hires settle in and build those first connections. Hands-on, not hands-off 💡: The best way to learn is to get involved—so we help our new joiners dive right in with structured tasks and the right level of support. Training should feel like an adventure, not a maze. Feedback is key 🔄: An onboarding process is never “finished.” We actively gather feedback from new hires, tweak as we go, and make sure the experience gets better and better. We’re always learning—just like our new team members! If we can make the first day (and weeks) feel as special as it should be, why settle for less? How do you make onboarding memorable at your company?
