Public water utilities in the US are facing a 5-year deadline to meet low parts-per-trillion limits for PFAS in drinking water. The EPA estimates that thousands of water systems will need to install advanced treatment processes to meet the limits. We are not going to "treat" ourselves out of this #PFAS problem. Yes, we have to diligently address our current exposures and protect our communities. That involves BOTH safeguarding our water supply as well stopping the flow of PFAS into our economy. The article rightly notes that the treatment materials will need to be replaced and when they do they need to be treated as hazardous waste. There are 3 current options for PFAS disposal and destruction, all have notable uncertainties regarding their ability to complete destroy and contain PFAS waste. This is according to EPA's 2024 Interim Guidance. https://lnkd.in/efeyvXWi 1. Hazardous waste landfill 2. Incineration (not just any incinerator, ones that are capable of fully combusting fluorinated chemicals, still highly uncertain) 3. Underground Injection (yeah....) Let's think for a minute about the communities that often share a fence line with these kinds of facilities.... How about we do our municipal water utilities a favor and make their job easier and stop using PFAS in the first place by replacing them with #saferchemicals.

There have been crucial updates in effect for PFAS limits based on EPA's PFAS Drinking Water Maximum Contaminant Level final rule. The new limits set by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) are significantly lower, requiring almost non-detect levels to pass. On 10 April, EPA released a long anticipated final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for six PFAS. For the first time ever, the US EPA has imposed a national regulation limiting the amount of six PFAS in drinking water, marking a crucial step towards safer water quality. This long-awaited rule, announced on April 10, will require all public water systems to start monitoring for these PFAS within three years, and then another two years to remove these PFAS from tap water. The agency has also made $1 billion in infrastructure funding available to help states implement PFAS testing and treatment at public water systems.
