A San Francisco Apartment, our first finished project in the USA. A project exclusively launched in our HOME ART SOUL book, located in the charming neighbourhood of Pacific Heights in San Francisco, California. Discover More: https://lnkd.in/dg_FKQfm "We approached the design of the Pacific Heights apartment with the understanding that our client’s art collection would grow and move around, so it was imperative we design a space in a style that could physically and visually flex and bend with the introduction of newness. It was fun to play with a polychromatic background here – I find that when you have a little bit of everything, as I do in my own home, it allows for much more freedom in creating that happy state where almost everything you introduce into a space works." Further preliminary design for 3 houses in Stratford, London. I’ve never quite been able to lose the pleasure to be found in looking at a windowless facade, especially those examples that veer towards the monumental. Hence my (and I suspect many others too) fascination with Georgian end of terrace blind window facades and the work of Hans Poelzig, as one important example. Preliminary façade to sit behind an existing listed Georgian garden wall in East London, alongside a busy road.

WALL REMOVAL | Part one A common ask when renovating an older home is how we can make it look and feel more open concept. This is often done by removing those walls that are currently separating the living spaces. When removing walls, it is of upmost importance to ensure the process is being done properly by installing appropriate footings, posts and support beams that often mean minor change to the basement or attic (if working on the main floor). Creating a beautiful space is more than aesthetics. We want to ensure everything is done right behind the walls leaving it looking and feeling good...from the inside out! Lately, a hot topic in the studio revolves around the question: should mid-century houses be classified as heritage assets? Some would argue that they lack significant heritage value due to their relatively young age, but considering the resources invested and the stories they embody, this viewpoint is being challenged. If we continue replacing buildings that don’t necessarily have heritage value yet, we’ll run out of old building stock and lose examples of past crafts and building techniques. Take this bungalow with a basement as an example; in contrast to contemporary two-story builds, its low profile and gently sloped roof are distinctive characteristics rarely seen today. The continuous beams running along the roof’s length are a classic mid-century design element, adding to its architectural appeal. By recognizing the future potential of homes like this one, whether kept in their current state or undergoing redesign, can help preserve their beauty and unique features, ultimately increasing their significance over time. In this video, Studio North’s Holly Mills describes our vignette render of the front porch deck area, with a big tree in front creating calm light, which could be a calming spot to enjoy afternoon light with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine (depending on the time of day). We are currently working through the pre-construction phase with our friends and colleagues Alair Homes in Calgary. In what architectural style would you most accurately categorize your home? Does it align with the "Modern Shed" style? However, this descriptor may not fully capture the aesthetic appeal when crafting a listing description. I would generally opt for the "1970 Traditional Modern" style. Ah, Real Estate, Lol

A BLEND OF THE OLD & NEW IN CONSTRUCTION Yes! As per my experience in renovations and the construction sector, I personally feel that in architecture, blending the old with the new often creates a more compelling narrative for housing schemes. Retaining elements of historical significance honors the past while infusing contemporary design principles ensures relevance and functionality for modern living. This synthesis not only adds richness to the architectural landscape but also fosters a sense of continuity and connection to heritage. Integrating old and new elements can offer diverse aesthetics, catering to varying tastes and preferences within a community. Moreover, it promotes sustainable practices by repurposing existing structures and reducing environmental impact. Ultimately, such an approach results in housing schemes that resonate with both tradition and innovation, providing inhabitants with a unique and enriching living experience. Well done Naveed Ahmed, indeed!
We recently designed a sketch scheme for 60 apartments on a 140 year old church. The design takes inspiration from the existing church looking at material, fenestration, composition and much more. A slightly taller modern section is proposed in the corner which contrasts the existing traditional church. Here's how we did it 👇 Looking to start a project?
