What I don't like about the so-called energy transition 1. First, it's crucial to understand that 82% of the world's energy is still derived from fossil fuels [2022]. This means that despite renewable projects, the construction of coal, gas-fired, and nuclear plants, particularly in India and China, is growing. So, increased electricity generation is the actual narrative. These Asian nations are more likely to determine the trajectory of climate goals [Asia and Latin America] than affluent Western countries. 2. The lack of transparency in our energy and environmental policies is not just a concern; it's a pressing issue. The trillions in subsidies, carbon tax credits, and the distinct lack of accountability could have far-reaching consequences for our planet and our future. It's high time we demand more transparency and accountability in these crucial areas. 3. Let's talk about the issue of wrong assumptions. The International Energy Agency says we've used the most oil we'll ever need, so we don't need to dig for more oil. But this seems wrong. People in rich countries were allocated 13 barrels of oil daily, while people in poor countries get only 3. This isn't just about energy; it's about fairness. We must ensure everyone has the same chances to make and use energy, no matter where they live. Rules for clean energy are not fair. The rich benefit from using more electricity, and the poor suffer. Having more electricity is linked to education and better living. 4. It's crucial to avoid assuming that the average person cannot understand climate models. If a concept is complex, it's your responsibility to break it down and explain it in a way that empowers everyone to be part of the solution. 5. Many news articles have an Imperialist tone as if this must be done now and will be forced on citizens of the US or whatever country you are from. The consent of the governed here is critical. New FERC rule 1920 is forcing all utilities to do renewable energy projects. I think it is pushing the limits of the consent of the governed. 6. Renewable energy, such as wind and solar, needs 435% and 333% of the amount of mined materials to produce the same energy as a nuclear power plant. Where is efficiency in renewable energy? That needs a backup power source. 7. There are too many mistruths about the costs. Wind & solar are more expensive due to the fact they are intermittent power sources, & need backup power. The best way to know if projects should be done is a cash flow model, not the deceptive LCOE used in cost projections for renewables, which does not account for higher land use.

Grid flexibility will be a huge opportunity for #CommunityEnergy as our energy system continues to see higher growth in variable renewables, especially given the recent reversal of the moratorium on onshore wind! The GB energy system wasn't set up for this... a huge national spine (transmission) with increasingly insufficient local distribution is facing big problems, flexibility being one of them. Elexon chief exec says that "flexibility will be crucial for the energy transition." Ofgem's recent announcements confirm key changes to the future of our energy system: - Elexon to act as market facilitator for local energy - Local and national flexibility markets to be more closely aligned - Proposal for a common Flexibility Market Asset Registration (FMAR) The need for flexibility is huge and energy communities can provide it, with local generation, storage, participation in demand response and load shifting. Picking up from my post last week regarding asset diversity, here's another look at that portfolio of wind and solar assets. Now I'm showing the correlation of daily electricity production between each asset, measured over a 300-day concurrent period. Notice the benefit of P2 and P5 in particular, whose outputs are negatively correlated to most of the other assets. In the game of asset diversity, these are the all-star performers! An analysis like this is easy when we have the daily operational data. It's a lot more challenging when we lack that data, and especially when the assets haven't yet been built! 👏 Sage Geosystems Inc. and good luck with this innovative project. This is an extremely exciting development in geothermal project commercialisation and integration. Geopressured Energy Storage… 6-10 hours storage, 70-75% energy efficiency at a $10 per MWe LCOE… those metrics are highly appealing. Exploring these systems, particularly with the potential of the above perfromance, is a natural exercise for all geothermal developers. Continuing my discussion around extreme energy consumption from data centers earlier this week, it was encouraging to see the ExxonMobil and Chevron creating solutions for the space that can help bridge from today to a future where we can achieve 100% renewable energy for these facilities. There was an interesting point that these energy suppliers create their own power for their facilities - so this expansion does make sense and fills a needed infrastructure gap that we have when building these facilities in areas that require upgrades that can polarize local communities. The supermajors are part of the transition solution that we need to move forward. #AI #ClimateTech #ClimateSolutions

𝟮𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗞 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 𝗔 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 I recently explored the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) from 2005 to the latest release in July 2024. Using this dataset, which includes information on all electricity-generating sites, installed capacity, and ownership, I analysed the top 5 companies by installed capacity in the UK wind energy sector per year. The result? A bar chart race that visually tracks the evolution of installed capacity for the industry leaders over the past two decades. Here are a few key takeaways that I believe the community would find interesting: 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: One of the most notable changes was Dong Energy’s full transition to clean energy in 2017, when they rebranded as Ørsted. 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Scottish Power was acquired by Iberdrola in 2007, and RWE acquired Innogy (a subsidiary of E.On focused on renewables) in 2019, positioning itself as one of the leaders in UK wind. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: Ørsted has been the dominant leader in UK wind since 2017, adding significant sites such as Hornsea 1 (546 MW in 2018, later expanded to 1218 MW by 2020) and Hornsea 2 (1386 MW in 2022). However, SSE plc has been closing the gap, especially with the addition of Dogger Bank A in 2023 (1200 MW). 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Dogger Bank B and C are expected to come online in 2025 and 2026, adding 2400 MW for SSE, which could make them the largest player in UK wind—at least for a while. Ørsted's Hornsea 3 (2900 MW, expected in 2027) and Hornsea 4 (2400 MW, with a final investment decision expected by the end of 2024) may help Ørsted regain the lead.
