The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) recently conducted the first-ever government-initiated, unannounced exercise of an offshore renewable energy facility. This exercise is a significant step in ensuring the environmental safety of the growing offshore wind industry. BSEE evaluated Vineyard Wind's ability to respond to a spill by activating their incident management team and following their approved plan. While wind farms don't have the risk of a major blowout like oil rigs, they still use oil and fluids for operations, making spill response crucial. BSEE conducts these exercises as part of its mission to protect the environment. A gas pipeline has ruptured off the Victorian coast last weekend, prompting an investigation by authorities. The incident involves ageing gas platforms, with concerns over safety and transparency in decommissioning processes. Another example of the damaging implications of oil and gas infrastructures on our fragile ocean ecosystem. Senator Peter Whish-Wilson of the The Australian Greens party expressed frustration regarding the rupture, especially given Esso's plans to establish a carbon capture and storage (CCS) operation in the vicinity: “Nopsema is supposed to have oversight and regulate the environmental management of the offshore fossil fuel industry, but coastal communities are fast losing confidence in the ‘independent’ regulator, which has become more of an enabler than an investigator of offshore oil and gas projects. If Esso cannot manage to decommission rig infrastructure safely I highly doubt it’s capable of carrying out risky carbon capture and storage it has planned for the region.” We're drawing a line in the sand for our oceans, and we're committed to advocating for an end to the search for new oil and gas in our ocean by 2028. An expansion by Enbridge Inc. subsidiary East Tennessee Natural Gas LLC to transport 300,000 Dth/d across 122 miles to a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) project would result in “limited adverse environmental impacts,” FERC staff said.

Australia's sixth Offshore Wind Zone, located in the Bass Strait Region off the coast of Northern Tasmania, has just been announced by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy 🌊 The declared area covers >7,000km2, extending offshore off Burnie in the west to Bridport in the east, and was chosen chosen based on: → Strong, consistent winds (ranked amongst the best in the world for wind energy production!); → Proximity to areas of high electricity demand; → Potential to support infrastructure via the port of Bell Bay.
