Improving motorcyclists’ safety: FEMA joins the European Road Safety Charter. The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) has officially joined the European Road Safety Charter (ERSC), marking a significant step toward enhancing road safety for motorcyclists. The ERSC, spearheaded by the European Commission, is the largest civil society platform dedicated to road safety, with over 4,000 public and private entities actively participating. This collaboration will enable FEMA to share its expertise and initiatives, contributing to a broader community focused on improving safety for all road users. By joining forces, FEMA and the ERSC aim to inspire and learn from each other, implementing effective actions that target motorcyclists specifically. As Europe’s leading motorcyclists’ organisation, FEMA is poised to make a meaningful impact in promoting safer riding conditions across the continent.

In 2023, Bridgestone road safety initiatives impacted nearly 100,000 people in the communities we're part of throughout the world. That number is the result of many standout initiatives, including our "Sicurezza of the road" programme. In partnership with the Italian Red Cross – and made possible by Bridgestone volunteers – we provided road safety workshops to 5,000 school students, covering everything from vehicle control to tyre maintenance. It's no surprise that 2023 was also the year that we launched the Bridgestone Road Safety Program (BRSP). The BRSP unites everything we’re doing in the global road safety arena as we help the fightback against our big road safety problem. We need to follow the lead of Sweden (and Japan) in building 2+1 highways not full Motorways in New Zealand. There a lot cheaper and the money saved could be used for other infrastructure investments. The slide below shows that the benefits are almost the same as motorways. Much of the 2+1 upgrades can be undertaken on existing highway alignments often within road reserves. Where there is a lot of accessways a new road corridor or alternative access arrangements maybe required. That’s the Swedish experience.
