Lightning Network is a complete failure and will never work I’ll tell you a story about my first hand experience with Lightning Network and how I learned that it will never work. In 2013, I co-founded Lykke - the 2nd ever crypto company in Switzerland - with one clear vision: build a global crypto exchange that would be fast, secure, and scalable. I loved the vision of Lykke founder Richard Olsen and was fully on-board to make it happen! You have to understand that back in the early days, the crypto world was very divided between centralized and decentralized solutions. Centralized exchanges worked well but had serious risks - if they got hacked, all the client’s funds would be gone. Just remember the disastrous hack of Mt.Gox in 2014. Decentralized exchanges were safer but painfully slow and limited. At Lykke, we didn’t want to choose between speed and security, so we decided to build the best of both worlds - a semi-decentralized exchange. In a semi-decentralized exchange the matching engine is centralized – hence trading is super fast – while custody and settlement are decentralized, making clients funds safe & secure. By 2016, our semi-decentralized exchange was up & running and we were making massive progress! Clients were coming to us because of our unique semi-decentralized trading and we felt like we were at the top of the world… But as our user base grew, so did our problems. Blockchain was slow and killing us! Every transaction on the exchange had to be confirmed by the network, and it was just taking way too long. We could only process 7-10 transactions per second on the Bitcoin blockchain. That might work for a small network, but for our vision of a global exchange? It was a just not working. In 2017, we seriously considered Lightning Network (LN) as a solution – back then called “off-chain settlement”. Lightning Network looked like the solution we were searching for - a way to scale blockchain to 100’000 transactions per second, while keeping trading secure and low-cost. It was supposed to be fast, allowing transactions to happen off-chain and then settle on the blockchain later. It sounded like a dream…So, we went all in!
