We’re so very proud to add this piece of hardware to the list of growing accolades Alluvial Decoder has received over the past few years.. While certainly “unofficial”, this “award” may honestly be one of the most meaningful to us as this entire instance occurred within the context of a spontaneous conversation among relative strangers (now new friends) on the ever-critical need for accessible, socially impactful design. We truly cannot thank Rob Gregory - Architect, Jonathan Lowy, and the fine folks from VMZINC for their support and for calling attention to our project. We believe it, and others tackling similar major world issues, to be vastly important in today’s rapidly-changing environment (both literally and figuratively) While not taking home any new “official” awards, Alluvial Decoder clearly resonated with numerous delegates/judges and quickly became a major talking point amongst many in attendance as a truly extraordinary achievement. As a result of these discussions we’ve had numerous folks from nearly every corner of the globe expressing interest in using it as a key project precedent for community/social impact, data visualization, wayfinding, climate awareness, and small budget/big impact design. That alone is so very much more than we could have ever hoped for. The research I am involved in looks to develop and challenge the current modernistic dogmas, and proposes a new form of architecture that responds to more complex scenarios. My portfolio consists of work that has been accumulated across my masters highlighting the plethora of prototyping and design formulations. It’s the first #MasonryMonday of July! Can you believe how quickly 2024 is going by?! To start off the month, here’s another book recommendation: Reglazing Modernism, by Angel Ayón, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Uta Pottgiesser, and Nathaniel Richards. As many of the icons of the Modern Movement get older, the conservation of the buildings is becoming paramount in the minds of building users and professionals. One issue peculiar to the Modernist movement is the use of metal-framed single-glazed exterior enclosures, including windows, storefronts, and window walls. While the buildings may appear to be serviceable, the energy issues that arise with these enclosures can endanger them. Put simply, Modernist icons have not performed well when it comes to sustainability and user comfort. Ayón et al feature 20 case studies of buildings in the United States and Europe where either Restoration, Rehabilitation, or Replacement of the exterior glazed assemblies took place. The buildings—all of which have some sort of local historic landmark designation—were all retained and are thriving from a building performance standpoint. This is a well-written book featuring excellent, clear graphics (including 3-D sections and details), and a detailed account of what took place at each project. Full disclosure: I am a bit biased, as two projects were completed by current or previous employers. "Playful Legacies: The Enduring Spirit of Archigram's Adventure Playground in Milton Keynes" In 1989, I found myself in Milton Keynes, standing at the former site of Archigram's Adventure Playground. The playground, a whimsical testament to the innovative spirit of the 60s, had sadly been demolished. But, as I looked around, I couldn't help but notice that the spirit of playfulness lingered—both in the politics and architecture of the area. Architects: Archigram (1973). Archigram, the enfant terrible of the architectural world in the 60s, was a collective known for their avant-garde ideas and radical designs. Despite their outsized influence and mind-bending concepts, they only ever managed to translate one of their imaginative blueprints into a public building during their practice from 1969 to 1974. This singular creation was the brainchild of Denis Crompton and Ron Herron, two members of the Archigram ensemble. The Adventure Playground was an architectural manifestation of fun and freedom, a place where children could let their imaginations run wild. Unfortunately, like many bold ideas, it was ahead of its time and eventually fell victim to the wrecking ball. Milton Keynes' Adventure Playground might be gone, but its legacy endures. The site now embodies a different kind of play—one involving the intricate dance of local politics and the ever-evolving landscape of architecture. It's as if the playground's spirit of innovation and boundary-pushing has seeped into the very ground, keeping the local architects and politicians on their toes. As for the architectural association in Bedford Square, it seems they still have a bit of a pecking order. Perhaps they could use a bit of the playground's anarchic charm to shake things up. After all, who says serious architecture can't be fun? As our planet grows warmer, the responsibility to design for shade becomes increasingly critical. At CannonDesign, we believe building owners, civic leaders and designers must collaborate to increase shade cover through creative approaches. Projects like our Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation, designed in partnership with Hepner Architects, is just north of Tampa, Florida. The project employs a minimum 2:1 ratio for shading full glazed walls. All other windows are covered with a perforated metal panel to provide shading and safety to the exterior. Simple things add! We can provide comfort, energy savings, and quality of life. These shaded spaces aren’t just performing - they become social centers, places to get away, or meet with friends.
