I detest #PMQs. Few things illustrate the disconnect between politics and the everyday concerns of the public more clearly than this weekly spectacle. Today, like many others, I watched in silence as the Grenfell Inquiry report was delivered. The session concluded with a solemn reading of the names of those who tragically lost their lives, victims of a system that failed them—MPs, Prime Ministers, Governments, and companies alike. Immediately afterwards, the coverage shifted to PMQs. A brief tribute was paid, followed swiftly by the usual theatrics: cheers, jeers, and even discussions on trivial matters such as ticket sales for Oasis concerts. While I acknowledge the importance of a range of issues, the timing and tone felt incredibly out of step with the gravity of the moment. Just moments before, the Grenfell United press conference had ended with a direct call to Sir Keir Starmer. Yet instead of addressing this urgently, he was caught up in making light-hearted remarks about "half the country queuing for Oasis tickets." I have no doubt that Grenfell will eventually be discussed at PMQs, but given the seriousness of the subject, it should have been the immediate priority. The lack of sensitivity today was especially jarring, underscoring the urgent need for reform to bridge the growing divide between our political institutions and the public they are meant to serve.
