Let me share a bit of my path to STEM:
Growing up, while money was tight, I was grateful that my family had enough to always meet my needs. That being said, I never got to attend the premium summer camps my peers in richer areas got to. My mom was a stay-at-home mom and did her best. She prioritized my STEM education, but no matter her goals, she could never afford to send me to those premium camps.
I was lucky enough to attend two summers of robotics camp for free through gracious donors, which I attribute to my current interest in robotics and AI, but those opportunities required rigorous applications and were highly selective. Access to STEM Education at a young age should not be selective - it should be universal. Right now there is a premium on quality STEM education - I aim to end that.
This leads me to Camp STEMPowered LLC. My goal is twofold:
1. Offer low-cost camps to EVERYONE with no income checks.
2. Offer free camps to low-income students attending school districts with historically low STEM resources (this is where I lean on the generosity of donors).
I plan to focus on summer camps, but will also incorporate virtual webinar learning sessions, and hackathons to instill confidence in each kid that a career in STEM is achievable regardless of where they come from.
That being said, I can't do it alone. There are a few ways I could use help:
1. If this message resonates with you and you have the time, consider applying for a position on the board.
2. While I am still in the process of applying for nonprofit status, if you have any connections with experience in grant writing or corporate giving please send them my way!
3. Repost this to gain visibility.
Just as generosity has been shown to me, I plan to continue the cycle and help the next generation. Together we can show ALL people have a place in the wonderful field of STEM!
And just like that Camp STEMPowered LLC is official! Camp STEMPowered aims to bring accessible STEM education to children nationwide starting with Columbus, OH through summer camps, webinars, and hackathons. We are currently searching to fill a board. If you or someone you know is interested in serving on the board of a nonprofit and loves sharing STEM with children of diverse backgrounds please apply to join the board here: https://lnkd.in/eSN94VaF. Applications are due September 20th, 2024. Please share to all interested!
