Survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remain low in the UK, with fewer than one in 10 people surviving. Which is why we’re backing Restart a Heart Day today. Restart a Heart (RSAH) is an annual initiative led by Resuscitation Council UK which aims to increase the number of people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests by helping more people learn CPR. Learn CPR, act fast, save lives. #DefibrillatorAwareness #SaveALife #CPR #FirstAid #BePrepared #HeartHealth #EmergencyResponse #FirstAidForAll #FirstAidTraining #RestartAHeartDay

Today marks #WorldRestartAHeartDay 🫀🌍, highlighting the critical role early intervention plays in saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest. Research shows that when CPR is performed and defibrillators are used before emergency services arrive, as many as 200,000 lives could be saved each year. We can all take action by promoting and supporting these essential steps: 📚 Understanding CPR principles and techniques 🤲 Practicing effective chest compressions ⚡ Familiarizing with the locations and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) within local areas Increasing preparedness ensures more lives can be saved when every second counts. Do you know what to do if someone suffers a cardiac arrest? Recognizing the need for CPR and acting quickly can be the difference between life and death. When someone experiences a cardiac arrest, immediate action is vital. Here's what to do: ✅Assess responsiveness: Tap the person and check for breathing. ✅Call Emergency Services: If unresponsive or not breathing normally, dial emergency services (e.g., 108 in your region). ✅Start Chest Compressions: Place hands in the center of the chest and press firmly at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. ✅Provide Rescue Breaths (If Trained): If trained in CPR, give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. ✅Continue CPR: Keep performing CPR until help arrives or signs of life return. Acting swiftly and confidently can significantly increase the chances of survival. Remember, in an emergency, every moment matters. On the 23rd anniversary of September 11, members of The Portfolio Strategy Group commemorated the day by participating in a Hands Only CPR training workshop. Observing this National Day of Service and Remembrance, we attended the session at the Westchester Country Center, where we received instruction from the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Cardiac arrest—an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs—is a leading cause of death. Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. We will never forget 9/11, honoring the lives lost and affected, and the resilience of a nation forever changed.

Our groundbreaking Heartsafe Communities Scheme in Wythenshawe, Manchester has more than halved the distance to a nearest defibrillator! A potentially lifesaving change for their community ❤️ Previously, the average round trip to a defibrillator was estimated at 1,850m, taking about 14 minutes. Thanks to our scheme, in partnership with Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance and Oliver Cookson Foundation the distance is now 858m, a six-and-a-half-minute round trip. Reducing the average distance to a defibrillator is vital as every second counts in a cardiac arrest. Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival, but for every minute someone goes without help, the survival rate drops by up to 10%. During the project we also installed more publicly accessible defibrillators in residential areas, as eight out of 10 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home. To find out how you can make your community Heartsafe, read our guide: https://lnkd.in/eztRKxGd We hope this project can provide a model for how communities across the UK can make it easier to get CPR training and access a defibrillator in case of an emergency.
