Statsbomb are such a great case study for what companies succeed in this industry: 1) Identified a gap in the market and provided clubs what they were already asking for not some hypothetical thing they'd need in the future. 2) Never tried to be a one-stop - realized what they were good at and focused on doing the best job at that thing. 3) Engaged with both current analysts and aspiring analysts - offering free data and resources/github repos. Meant when bloggers/public analysts got jobs at clubs they were much more likely to buy a data set they knew and had already built things on top of. 4) Almost all the marketing was interesting content instead of "this is why we are best". Allowing their writers and analysts to use the data to identify interesting trends and tell good stories meant that people in clubs engaged with the marketing materials even after they were already customers. I see so many sports technology companies, especially early stage ones, miss out on these key learnings.

xPass Model from StatsBomb a very interesting read on how we see the graph on Manchester City Football Club Rodri’s passes. The passes are grouped into bins based on his expected completion rate and then see them plotted against his performance in each bracket. The graph showed Rodri can recycle safe possession and play line-breaking passes into the opposition block.
