Segment Anything Model (SAM) is a relatively new (about 1 year old) model from Meta AI that can find almost any object in an image. SAM is very good at point and click segmentation (ie tell SAM where to look) but so far it has been more difficult to use SAM for automatic segmentation. Sometimes SAM doesn't find obvious objects and sometimes it returns too much clutter. The truth is the current SOTA in image segmentation is not magic but still requires parameter tuning. For example you can tell SAM how finely to sample the image, set probability like criteria that determines what is a valid object, and tune other parameters to find more or less in the image. In addition it is also useful to sometimes post-process labels based on shape and color. Discussions about these issues motivated me to write a Napari plugin to visualize and filter SAM labels. 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗔 𝟯𝗗 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀. 🐈 Last weekend my team Qasim L. Bohan Wang Yongan Yu and I built Hey Darling! a lovable 3D cat which helps older people find comfort in AI technology. Since we found out that only 9.5% AI technology target people above the age of 55 years old, and that 50.9% of elderly struggled with social isolation, where another 30.2% struggled with loneliness. To solve this we decided to build something that helps them with day to day tasks and through AI! We used 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲.𝗷𝘀 to build a custom cat that helped us reach a few goals. Making it easier for the them to utilize tech which we did by making it able to engage conversationally through voice, since typing can often be difficult with older people. Another goal we had was to help them better understand tech by making Darling as non-robotic as possible therefore improving clarity. We did this by mapping mouth movement with Darling's speech decibels so its easier for the people to see what its speaking. We also added extra functionality that would make the experience with Darling unique. By helping them remember things, we integrated memory so they can always ask for a reminder, as well as a Calendar feature where they can show a pop up calendar with events that you can ask Darling to add and remove! We also implemented image search to give a reminder of what things look like! You can also pet Darling through an 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗖𝗩 component that lets you interact with it by using your hands.
