Better late than never... Two weeks ago I had the chance to attend #GamesBeatNext - an event looking to the future of the gaming & immersive tech industries. It's been years since I've attended any kind of conference and so I had to force my brain back into networking shape, but everyone was so welcoming it quickly became a joy. My favorites among the many excellent sessions: "Ethical Growth: Navigating an Ambiguous Era" with Rory McGuire, Emily Greer, Shannon Loftis (she/her), and Daryl Ogden. The first session was a panel discussion continued in a later roundtable, and both featured hard conversations around how to lead a business ethically in a time where the future of gaming is - sure, "ambiguous" is a nice way to put it. There were no easy answers, but it's critical to have this kind of conversation at a time when many would rather bury their heads in the sand and pretend everything's okay. Let's be scared about the future - together! Bernard Yee's "Childhood Fantasies Fulfilled: What games learn from puppies, dolls and imaginary friends": a heartfelt plea for a different kind of game experience focused on exploring humanity's "tend and befriend" instincts over "fight or flight." It was also an introduction to Windup Mind's very first virtual pet, who I'm excited to meet (despite it leaning more towards dog than cat).
