NatWest Group’s agreement to acquire most of Sainsbury’s banking arm is the latest sign of increased UK banking sector consolidation this year, which has been driven by lower valuations and the pursuit of scale and diversification. The deal, announced on 20 June, is the fourth mid-sized banking sector acquisition announced this year, and takes the total to GBP130 billion of assets. We believe lower valuations across UK banks have encouraged the increased consolidation activity. Further opportunistic or strategic acquisitions could follow, barring a severe setback to macroeconomic conditions. We expect any further deals to primarily involve loan portfolios, non-lending businesses, or wealth-management assets. Wow 😮 I did not see this one coming, however quite the strategic play being this Group together. Given Debbie Crosbie’s previously working knowledge of CYBG / Virgin Money this is quite a clever move. Create super Groups made up of the small brands will hopefully bring about a more competitive ability to challenge the Big 4 on the High Street. I like the idea of the brands remaining and Nationwide remaining a mutual. Good thinking on their part in terms of creating brand loyalty. 🚨 𝘽𝙍𝙀𝘼𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂: Nationwide Building Society's proposed takeover of Virgin Money looks set to move ahead as the boards of both lenders have agreed a recently tabled £2.9bn deal. Bosses at Nationwide have been looking over the Virgin's books since the 220p per share offer was first suggested earlier this month, and now the pair have firmed up a preliminary agreement. The move is now expected to be complete later this year, bringing together the country's fifth and sixth largest retail lenders and creating a combined group of 25,000 staff and 700 branches serving 24.5 million customers.
