Growing European jobs! 🧑🔬🧑💻 European Mid-Market private equity-backed companies added over 160,000 jobs in 2022, representing employment growth of 7.9%, well ahead of the 2.0% for all European companies. Those jobs were added in companies at the heart of Europe’s sustainable and digital transformation, with 20% more workers hired in the energy and environment sector, 15% more in ICT, and 10% in finance and insurance, a sector fuelled by Europe’s strength in dynamic fintechs. An interesting report achieved by Invest Europe on Thursday about private equity and venture capital portfolio companies continuing to lead job creation in Europe. The Private Equity at Work report tracks employment and job creation across Europe, and showed that there was a 7.2% increase in 2022, which is more than 3.5 times the overall European growth rate. This means that 5% of the European workforce is employed by private equity and venture capital-backed companies, to a total of 10.9m - and jobs supported by the VC segment exceeded 1 million for the first time in the study. It was privilege to be asked by Chair, Louise Smith to speak at the Innovate Finance CEO Forum in London last week. It was a hugely engaging session with the member base representing many of the UKs top founders, CEOs and innovators in the FinTech industry. The presentation ended with us discussing four key pillars for Recruitment and Retention Strategy: - Talent Aquisition Excellence Including internal and external recruitment strategy to ensure wide access to diverse and emerging talent pools - Competitive Positioning Including employer branding, a competitive reward strategy that includes equity and growth incentives and differentiated and unique value propositions - Emerging Skills Alignment Including the identification of skills gaps, learning, development and succession planning strategies, fostering entrepreneurialism and academic partnerships - Retention Mastery Including purpose driven leadership, an authentic and inclusive ambitious people centric culture, in going investment in your people and more agile and legacy creation career opportunities compared to larger corporates. We also talked wider about the market and fintech ecosystem, acknowledging the increased proposition of investment in the UK Fintech market compared to Europe this year and increased successes and larger fundraises of the challenger banks resulting in even more rapid evolution of the sector driving demand for transformational leaders. Executive roles now require expertise in areas like blockchain, AI, and even more regulatory compliance, with companies competing fiercely for talent capable of scaling operations and fostering innovation. This talent race isn't limited to fintech; with wider sectors adopting more deep tech and regulatory change drawing from the same pool, intensifying competition. Across Europe, fintech hubs such as Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Dublin, and wider are leveraging supportive ecosystems, government incentives, and global talent to compete with London and the UK to further their own market position in payments, RegTech, and WealthTech. Amid this competition, executive search strategies must adapt. Recruitment is no longer about filling roles but aligning candidates with the entrepreneurial and growth-focused mindset required to thrive in high-growth sectors and London and the UK have to be seen as attractive career and life destinations for talent with the scale up and value creation experience that is sought after.
