Want to make your stories more engaging?
Appeal to the five senses:
⇢ Sight:
"The sleek, midnight-blue sports car gleamed under the showroom lights."
⇢ Sound:
"The coffee machine hummed to life, the gentle gurgling promising a rich, aromatic brew."
⇢ Touch:
"The cashmere sweater felt like a warm embrace against her skin."
⇢ Smell:
"The scent of freshly baked bread floated through the kitchen, bringing back memories of Sunday mornings."
⇢ Taste:
"The first bite of the chocolate melted on his tongue, releasing waves of bittersweet intensity."
Here is a short example:
The train doors hissed open, releasing a gust of stale air. Sarah stepped inside, her heels clicking against the worn metal floor. The familiar scent of coffee and a cheap cologne filled her nostrils as she squeezed in between two dull, gray suits.
As the train lurched forward, Sarah tightened her grip on her worn leather handbag and stared out the slightly fogged glass of the window. Outside, the city blurred into streaks of grays and browns. The rhythmic clacking of wheels on tracks provided a soothing backdrop to the quiet murmur of fellow commuters.
At her stop, Sarah joined the stream of passengers flowing onto the platform. The bitter taste of her morning espresso lingered on her tongue as she emerged into the crisp morning air, bracing for another workday.
This story uses all five senses:
- Sight: visual descriptions of the train and city
- Sound: hissing doors, clicking heels, clacking wheels
- Smell: stale air, coffee, cheap cologne
- Touch: warn leather, crisp air
- Taste: lingering espresso
