This week I had the opportunity to join several my Sales counterparts and their leadership for a mid-quarter strategy session. We spent the full day diving deep into our accounts and collaborating on strategies. A few takeaways: 1. The magic of a consumption revenue model is when you can help customer executives predict and optimize their future spend accurately. 2. The CS <> Sales partnership becomes even more critical to your businesses success when you are selling to the same customer over and over again rather than a one and done deal that renews every year. A good partnership aligns compensation and incentive strategies that drive revenue. 3. Pulling in leadership empowers you to get more creative with engagement tactics. It’s better to pull in your leaders before there is a problem for them to come in and solve.

I've been in sales and sales leadership roles for almost 2 decades and here's what no one wants you to know: Those who pound on "activity" as the way to drive results.... LACK REAL LEADERSHIP. It's EASY to just tell teams to double their activity. What actually takes effort? Taking time to diagnose where there are gaps in the sales process. On marketing leadership. I've been re-visiting a not too-old classic in marketing leadership by Patrick Barwise (disclosure: I'm incredibly lucky to count Patrick as a great friend and mentor), and my past colleague Thomas Barta: The 12 Powers of Marketing Leaders. I'd say the most important Power is to "Deliver Results no Matter what", and to "act like an investor". Also, marketers have the burden of proof, as marketing impact is not a matter of faith but of proven numbers. However, my favourite power is to "Fall in-love with with your world". Leave your desk, walk the halls, enjoy every interaction, idea and crisis, as much as the latest launch.

There's a difference between knowing how to market and being a great Marketer. Business is a team sport, and you can't be the best at everything But, everyone has a superpower. That's the advice I got from Cassie Young of Primary Venture Partners in this question for This Is Marketing Leadership: ❓ What advice would you give to someone who aspires to become a senior marketing leader? ❓ Are there any important lessons or insights you've gained throughout your career that you'd like to share with others? Figure out your superpower and just name it. For me, I am NOT the best channel owner (e.g. the best person at paid search or the best person at managing sales reps). My superpower is that I can think very holistically about a business and rally big, disjointed teams. I'm exceptionally data-driven and an effective storyteller, and those traits combined make me a really strong general manager. I am far from the best marketer you'll ever meet, but I do think I am one of the best GMs you'll meet :) I made the point about "First Team" in an earlier question - EMBRACE IT!
