FIFA announced the calendar of 104 games for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Together he informed the 16 stadiums used during the tournament and their respective host cities. This will be the first World Cup organized by three countries, in 16 cities: 11 in the USA, three in Mexico and two in Canada. FIFA has separated the matches into three main areas — West, Central and East Coast — and each of the 48 teams will play the first phase within one of these regions. The teams will be divided into 12 groups in the initial phase. The two best countries in each group and the eight best third-placed countries will advance to the second phase, starting the knockout stage. The group stage will have 72 games, in all venues, and will take place between June 11th and 27th. The first part of the knockout stage will run from June 28th to July 3rd, in 14 cities. The round of 16 will take place in eight stadiums, between July 4th and 7th. The World Cup will only take place in the United States from the quarter-finals onwards. FIFPRO and European Leagues Challenge FIFA FIFPRO and European Leagues have taken a significant step by filing a formal complaint against FIFA with the European Commission, accusing the governing body of "abusive and anti-competitive" practices related to the international match calendar. The complaint, filed on 14 October 2024, also involves La Liga and the PFA, representing a collective push for change in how FIFA handles global football scheduling. The main issues outlined include an oversaturated match calendar that poses risks to player welfare and the sustainability of domestic competitions. The complainants argue that FIFA has expanded major tournaments, such as the 32-team Club World Cup and the 48-team World Cup, without adequate consultation with players, clubs, or leagues, prioritising commercial interests over stakeholder engagement and athlete health. This complaint adds to a series of legal challenges questioning FIFA’s governance, following scrutiny over player agent regulations and the European Super League. The complainants seek a more collaborative decision-making process to ensure future scheduling considers player welfare and the stability of domestic leagues, without challenging FIFA’s authority as the global regulator. FIFA has responded by asserting that it consulted relevant bodies, such as FIFPRO, on the 2025-30 match calendar and maintains its adherence to regulatory standards. As the European Commission reviews the case, this challenge could have significant implications for football governance, potentially fostering greater transparency and stakeholder collaboration in future decisions. https://lnkd.in/eUFqGPX7 #Footballbusiness #FIFA

Is the tide turning for the FIFA Club World Cup’s fortunes? The recent announcements of DAZN as global broadcaster and three new sponsors coming on board would suggest it might be… Few new competitions (or new formats of existing competitions) have been as controversial before the action starts as FIFA’s 2025 edition of the tournament. But despite its unpopularity in certain quarters, fan interest is mounting - as evidenced by yesterday's draw stimulating five times more Google searches for the competition than any previous day this year - and brands including Hisense, AB InBev and (as of this week) Bank of America are sensing the value and coming on board. DAZN showing the competition free-to-air globally means we can expect momentum to continue to gather as we get closer to kick off. The Americas region is pivotal to FIFA, with its next three global competitions being held there (CWC 2025, World Cup 2026, Women’s World Cup 2027). As experts in the region working with sponsors and rights holders, We Are Laugh are excited about the opportunity this represents, but also mindful that many global brands are still testing the waters when it comes to football in this part of the world. With that in mind, here are 10 reasons for optimism when considering whether the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will prove to be a success...

News on FIFA International Match Calendar: European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe will jointly file a formal complaint to the European Commission on competition law grounds against FIFA regarding the international match calendar. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d78tHCgA However, according to FIFA some leagues in Europe - themselves competition organisers and regulators - are acting with commercial self-interest, hypocrisy, and without consideration to everyone else in the world. Those leagues apparently prefer a calendar filled with friendlies and summer tours, often involving extensive global travel. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUkeAzsq • What is the FIFA International Match Calendar? It is an outline agreement between FIFA, the six continental football confederations, the European Club Association, and FIFPro, which sets out which dates can be used for “official” and “friendly” international matches. • What is wrong with the FIFA International Match Calendar? FIFPRO: The international match calendar is now beyond saturation and has become unsustainable for national leagues and a risk for the health of players. FIFA Response: The current calendar was unanimously approved by the FIFA Council, which is composed of representatives from all continents, including Europe, following a comprehensive and inclusive consultation, which included FIFPRO and league bodies. #fifa #fifpro #news #football #confederations #sport #match #calendar #calcio #europe
