I like certainty.
For Vecova this past year has been anything but certain. We had to let go of a path that we had envisioned with and for the community and shepherded with our hearts and hands (for 10 years!). We had to face the tough reality that our building was no longer viable for our consumers and staff. We have had to make the heart wrenching decision to permanently close parts of our organization that have been stalwart foundational pieces, with us from the beginning. We have had to let valuable and committed members of our staff know that we will no longer have a job for them.
It has not been an easy year.
Certainty seems far from my grasp at the moment and that is an uncomfortable place for me. But perhaps that is what I am meant to learn. I am reminded of the phrase I heard years ago that helped me reframe difficult circumstances before: Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you and through you.
When I stop railing against our thorny reality and accept the circumstances, as painful and difficult as they are, something happens.
I can start to work the problem.
I can start to see possibilities.
I can think creatively about new solutions that weren’t on the table before.
I can ask for help and involve others.
I can let our values help guide a path forward.
I have recently revisited a book that has been a source of insight and wisdom for me called “Solving Tough Problem”" by Adam Kahane. In it he says problems are tough when they have three types of complexity: dynamic, generative and social. We are facing all three. There is no road map. We are feeling our way through as the circumstances shift and unfold. The entire system is impacted. So the solutions must be systemic, emergent and participatory.
Fortunately, I have a tremendous Team and Board of Directors that are working together to get us not only unstuck, but actually using the circumstances to our advantage to create new realities.
There is a lot of opportunity for Vecova and we have some exciting concepts on the horizon that are being born out of our willingness to solve tough problems and think differently. I am learning to sit in uncertainty and open my eyes to the landscape despite my discomfort. While the problems and solutions ebb and flow, I find confidence in our ability to navigate them with empathy and ingenuity.
Vecova has a bright future ahead of it.
Of this I am certain.
