Ironic opinion: having a personal brand is not an advantage for great employment in sales. It can be viewed as a risk to employers: “Are they all-in with us, or building to leave?” It can cause internal drama: Imagine how the top AEs feel about the “influencer” rep that’s a “Top 100 AE in Europe” but not even in the top half of their team? It puts more scrutiny on performance: “Maybe they’d perform better if they weren’t so busy creating content.” I’m glad I’ve built a brand, but it hasn’t given me an advantage in employment. My most recent role was landed due to backchannel feedback of my real performance, not my content or digital reputation. And my continued progress (or lack of progress) is 100% based on my internal reputation, not my online brand. Lots of advantages to building a brand, but still nothing compared to the advantage of doing great work and having internal credibility.

Hospitality to Public Relations: How My Journey Has Prepared Me for My Next Chapter Over the past 7 years, I have worked in the hospitality industry in all types of roles. From working behind the scenes as a line cook, to serving as the main point of contact as a hostess and server, to ultimately managing an entire restaurant. I have had the opportunity to view the industry from all angles. With this perspective, I’ve had the privilege of working directly with diverse clientele, managing high-pressure situations, and crafting memorable experiences. From creating seamless guest services to handling crisis communication, hospitality has given me a toolkit of skills that extend far beyond the restaurant industry. Now that I look back, I’m reflecting on the many ways my experience has prepared me for success in my new path in to Public Relations. ✨ Relationship Building: Whether with guests or sales representatives, cultivating trust through authentic connections is key. Hospitality has taught me to listen, understand needs, and create tailored experiences—skills vital for storytelling. 💬 Communication Under Pressure: Hospitality has refined my ability to stay calm, communicate effectively, and respond swiftly in high-pressure situations, essential for PR in fast-paced environments. 🔍 Attention to Detail: It's the tiniest details that elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary. A focus on precision and excellence in hospitality developed my sharp eye for detail, crucial for crafting flawless PR campaigns. 🌍 Cultural Sensitivity: Working with diverse guests taught me to navigate cultural differences and tailor messaging—critical for connecting with global audiences in PR. What lies ahead is still uncertain, but the opportunities are limitless. As I step into this new chapter, I’m excited to bring my skills in communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving with me. The intersection of hospitality and public relations is built on one thing: PEOPLE. Whether it’s a guest, a media outlet, or a brand, connecting and telling stories that resonate is at the heart of what I do. If you have insights on transitioning into PR or would like to connect, I’d love to hear from you! #HospitalityToPR #CareerTransition #PublicRelations #Storytelling #Communication #RelationshipBuilding #NewBeginnings

I want to share a story about returning to work after the birth of my first child. I always had a feeling I would be the kind of mom who would return to work sooner than most. The truth is, I really enjoy working. I have always known this, but I became even more keenly aware of it after my business was acquired a few years ago. When I exited, I took a partial sabbatical while I considered my next move. This was hard for me. I don’t always thrive in stillness, but years of burnout and disillusionment with my profession had taken their toll. I needed a break badly. In all honesty, I never expected to return to the industry. I explored a few new and different opportunities, but they never quite hit the mark. It wasn’t until I was pregnant that I started to think about a return to the PR industry. This was an unexpected development, but as time went on, I started to gain clarity on the things that really mattered to me in my work: freedom, collaboration, creativity, and leadership. For the first time, I began to miss the field I turned my back on. About six months after my daughter was born, I was hungry to get back to work. I really enjoyed my maternity leave, but I knew that I needed some variety in my days and that being totally off work for much longer would make me antsy. I needed something just for me, something that would fill my cup and help me be the best possible parent. I started to get a sense of the job market. I applied for a few in-house roles for which I was extremely qualified and anxiously mentioned I was returning from maternity leave in my cover letters. I didn’t get a single response. I was already nervous about returning to work after an extended break, and this didn’t help. I spoke to a few trusted advisors, colleagues and friends to get their insight. At the urging of Tak Yukawa, I started to think about returning to agency life. He introduced me to Maxine Jakubke at PUBLiSH Partners. One email introduction all of a sudden became an incredible offer that included working remotely, a gradual return to entry, and the chance to do the meaningful work I craved. More importantly, it gave me the gift of being a present mom for my daughter, which is undoubtedly the greatest perk of all. I am so grateful to work for a company that celebrates women and mothers. Imagine the world today if every workplace did the same. I hope that world is one my daughter gets to experience in her lifetime.
